Generations aren't defined by graphical leaps. They're defined by successive hardware releases. The gameplay of those games, in my opinion, feel like refined 6th generation games. The graphics are amazing though.

For me, the leap between top tier 7th gen games and launch 8th gen games was incredibly small. I guess there was a resolution bump and and more stable framerate but I spent most of the time saying "This could be done on PS3 and Xbox 360!". The evolution had been so slow.

Now we get games like Uncharted that look fantastic but you often don't see the improvement until you go back and play the old version. Definitely not as pronounced as comparing something like Heavenly Sword on PS3 to God of War on PS2.

I'm still a fan of having the best console hardware as well as owning every console (hence why I have a 4K TV a Pro, and soon an XB1X) but I'm afraid the days of having my mind totally blown have come to an end...outside of VR, that is.

Actually that comparison does not hold. On every review it is told gameplay and exploration are great. Gameplay-videos show the same. Horizon is one game I get for sure, when I get my PS4. And I give not too much on graphics, because when I get it, it will be multiple years old. I think at the moment Horizon will still be fun to pplay a few years from now.

There are other games mostly defined by looks. And these don't hold up well over time.

This is hat strikes you the most about that analogy...what about the Sexy woman who is a virgin with no interest in sex. Unless you find those nasty hateful feminists sexy then this make absolutely no sense. A woman who has no interest in sex isn't going to ... argh, too much wrong ith it. Pagan, why didn't you just say "but as you make conversation you find out she's a shallow bitch with the personality of a fish" This would have illustrated your point to a much clearer degree, make some actual sense, avoid suggesting you only play games so you can have sex with them and not fuck with my head.

LOL

I did not try to take that metaphor too literally, otherwise my brain would be broken.

Well I play on a 42" so I haven't noticed anything that stands out in that regard. But in Digital Foundry's PS3 vs PS4 tech analysis, they didn't mention anything about that either.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QAHlOJlQhsU

They also say that the PS3 version holds up about just as well as the PS4 version, (aside from lower resolution and framerate issues) and stands out as one of the best looking rpgs on PS3 by far. So I'm not sure how reliant Persona 5 is on the advancement of technology.

I think the high quality textures in Horizon are more reliant on this because the aim is to create something closer to photorealism, wheres the aim with Persona 5's artstyle could possibly be achieved even on PS2.

Aliasing isn't as problematic in highly realistic games because the aliasing hides in visually busy images. It's only visble in high contrast scenarios.

Persona 5 is basically the definition of high contrast, so high resolution would serve it very well. For example it's clearly visible in the 1080p version of the youtube video. Some of it may  be from compression but by logic alone those jaggies will be visible on a big screen.

I'm not trying to talk down Persona's visuals, I'm just saying that even highly stylized games such as it will benefit visibly from stronger hardware. The game in true 4k would probably be marvelous to look at.

Actually, if you have predefined pixmaps overlayed over other graphic (as shown in Persona), it is possible and actually easy to calculate soft alpha for antialiasing. Dunno if Persona does that, but this sort of game makes it possible. In 3D-games with free movement you have to calculate the antialiasing on the fly, which is often simply not done (on console) because it eats up a lot of resources.

I find Horizon to be a step ahead of Uncharted, personally.

Both are gonna be steamrolled pretty soon though, when Battlefront 2 releases (God of War and Metro Exodus after that too!)

Same here. Cpuldent believe my eyes how good an open world game can look. Except facial animation and some weather effects, where UC4 still has IMO the edge, everything else looks superior.

I've seen similar threads on the past about "game x" spoiling people but I've never felt that way. Not even back in the days of Donkey Kong Country where I thought games wouldn't ever look better. That's kinda what gaming does. It raises the bar then raises it again. Next year this time, the bar will be even higher--probably because of Uncharted LL.

Look at movies. Just when you think effects can't getter any better, they do. Then, when you look back at the older stuff, you notice the flaws. Personally, I own both games in the OP (and a PS4 Pro, no less!) and I still feel like graphical achievements are getting less and less noticable. That's why I was so crazy over PSVR. It felt like a revolution to me.

Graohics don't spoil other games for me, great gameplay does that. After BotW I could still play HZD. Yet after finishing HZD I didn't feel like getting into any other game while I still have MGS5 and Bloodborne sitting around. Instead back to VR, that works. Before VR I would take a month break watching movies or tv series after finishing an epic game.

I liked the order 1886. I wish sony takes another risk with it and makes a sequel or an expansion, Id be happy with that, the game looked great already.

I liked it too, enough that I want SOny to take the risk and make a sequel. But we seem to be too small in number for Sony to be willing to take that risk.

Except the game IS heavely scripted so I guess the way the ''physic engine'' works has probably more to do with the work they put into the animation of every detail on the screen which give the illusion of an advanced physic engine.

Kinda like how Tom Cruise movies give the illusion that he's taller than his female co-stars. It still works, who cares what tricks they use to get there?

I would like The Order 2 as well.

How do you want a cover shooter to play like?

I don't really care how a cover Shooter plays like because I've been playing cover based shooters since at least 2006 man  so bored of them, just like I'm totally done with FPS, overdone and boring, but I've been gaming since atleast 1995.

I have been gaming since 88 or so. Played platforms since those times on Pitfall. Guess all platformers play more or so the same and are boring.

Well, I'm probably too old. I learned a long time ago, that graphically impressive games aren't the one I remember five years from now, if they aren't bringing something else. I'm sure Horizon delivers on that front, though. But this graphic will look old in some years, The classics are the games that are fun even with graphic that is outdated.

Disagree man... Maybe graphic only won't burn in your memory, but I can tell you that the first thing that burned in my memory in GT1, FF IX and RE were their stunning graphics, but perhaps they only stayed because they were fantastic games... and FF IX I still relook at them from time to time and it is still gorgeous.

God help us if this is what 9th gen games are going to look like.

Horizon was like a beautiful sexy woman you see on the street. You start to fantasize how sex with her might be. But then it turns out that she is only a virgin who has no idea of sex. But hey. She looked good.

lol, people have been on fire with the Horizon comparisons and analogies lately.

I don't know about 9th gen, there's still a few blemishes here and there, not to mention HZD has some uncanny valley stuff in the faces of some characters (and lip syncing)

They are definitely top of its class though.

Agh, the reminder that we are all addicts to virtual entertainment, it almost makes me feel as if going back to regular drugs would be less costly and more soicable. Nex Machina is out in 9 hours, ff14 is sucking up my soull, I have an itch to get on wipeout and after this thread I desperatly want to go back to Persona 5 and spend some time in Horizons photo mode, maybe finish plating UC4...there simply is not enough time.

I need to do the speedrun and MP on UC4.

Or maybe the games are now starting to lose that feel of 7 gen games with small twerks in resolution ,particle and light effects. But why do I bother?

Visual generation leap already lost its meaning and importance to definitions a long time. So, why not? Call it 10th gen graphics while you are at it.
