Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Takahashi on Xenoblade Chronicles X's localization changes: "I didn't mind much at all"

So for those crying "censorship" to Xenoblade Chronicles X's localization changes, here's Takahashi's, the director, perspective on the changes that were made to release the game to the West.

“In terms of Xenoblade Chronicles X, there’s been a few different changes that were made to the game, but my personality is such that I’m not a stickler for products that I’ve already made, so I don’t really mind what the final product turns out to be in that sense,” Takahashi told me. “I really didn’t mind much at all, actually.”

....

“As a developer, I do feel like it’d be ideal to be able to adjust the content so that it’s culturally acceptable, whether it’s in the US or in the EU,” said Takahashi. “For example, there was a discussion about the breast slider. Jokingly, I said, ‘Well would it help if we had a crotch slider for the male?’ Obviously it was a joke, but they responded obviously it’s not gonna work out. I do realize there’s a cultural difference between what Japanese people think and what the rest of the world thinks.”

Even Nintendo's Japanese division's director, Genki Yokota, talked about how all divisions of Nintendo communicate when making such changes.

“When we have costumes or clothes that we have a little concern with, we share it with NoE and NoA and they’ll say, ‘No, no, that’s fine’ or ‘You’re right, that’s an issue,’” Yokota said. “If it is an issue, we’ll go back and say we’ll say, ‘We adjusted it this way, what do you think?’ There’s a lot of back and forth in that sense. Rather than compromise, it’s like we’re all aiming for the same goal, of being able to provide a good experience for everybody in all regions. And we’re aiming to have a game that has very little difference between the regions.”

Well, if one thing's for sure, it looks like Xenoblade 2 isn't going to be localizing Pyra's bust size! I still can't get over how big they were.

Imagine the outcry of any changes to the bust size. That would be hilarious! I mean, such nitpicky stuff.

Weird that they took out the breast slider but left the thousands of skimpy lady outfits...I would think the lack of clothing would be a bigger deal than the size of the ladies breasts...

I just watched the trailer with sound for the first time and realized that I have bigger problems than the boobs localization. If it doesn't come with Japanese voices I'll skip it no matter how big her boobs are.

If you demand respect or gratitude for your volunteer work, you're doing volunteering wrong.

The only changes I care about are story, other than that feel free.

Enjoy missing out on an amazing RPG, then. Or get the version on the Japanese e-shop.

So does this mean that NoE and NoA think that Pyra's outfit and boobs are okay? Or maybe they still haven't decided if they will change her.

Edit: I want to clarify that I don't mind it if they leave her how she is, I just think it's weird that Nintendo thinks her outfit is okay.

Localization is a good thing; no one should get angry that games are made to suit their audiences.

Obviously it can be frustrating to hear some dev team was forced to censor all kinds of things, but generally this is something they want to do. Not saying this game was going to do it, but when you offer big boobs and skimpy clothing on characters clearly designed to look like they're in their early teens to even pre-teens, you have to know that different parts of the world aren't going to react well. While all cultures are guilty of it, when children are sexualized it needs to be called out on it.
