It's already surpassed Xenoblade 1 in my view, so Xenoblade 2 is going to have quite the work cut out for it.

That's a low bar you're using XD the Xenoblade games aren't even that good. The only reason they're even being given attention is because it's Nintendo's only RPG series behind friggin' Pokemon. If it was "Tales of" swapped with Xenoblade, Nintendo's fanbase would be clamoring Tales of Berseria as GOTY, hell prob even GOAT material...

Persona 5 deserves recognition, it's a beautifully made game, but unfortunately Atlus will probably have to wait until Persona 6. The series is growing a lot with each iteration, at least. And it will earn some GOTY rewards.

I haven't played Bersia yet, but not even Symphonia competes with XBC. Xenoblade has a huge detailed open world that is more than just a field between towns. The combat is dynamic, and most characters can be specced out to two different party roles. Tank Riki is fun as hell. Xenoblade is chock full of side quests, areas that beg to be explored, and secret boss monsters to take down. The story and theme of living on giants is unique and interesting.

IMO Persona and XBC are both good series. Just as good as one another, and both deserving ot GotY.

Edit: How the heck do you think the battle system is clunky? You perform arts on the opponent by attacking from the right direction, and use combos to topple them. As you do this you slowly build up a super meter. Then you're allowed to use all your party members at once to do one massive epic attack in slow motion. That's the opposite of clunky. It has a ton in common with Mass Effect 2's battle system. Maybe try changing your party AI so that they don't automatically perform arts?

So far, Breath of the Wild is easily GOTY. Persona may get some awards too, but it's a bit too niche.

However, lots of games still have to be released, so we'll have to wait and see.

I respectuflly disagree. Xenoblade Chronicles is probably the best game I've ever played. In addition to being gorgeous for a Wii game, it's a masterpiece in every aspect.

I would agree XC for Wii is probably the greatest game ever made IMHO.

Mmm ... let's just say both of them will wipe off the awards.

Xenoblade Chronicles 2 and Persona 5 will probably do the same in the RPG category.

I'm still freaking salty about that DLC winning an award ...

What DLC?

I like the battle system, but that's just a preference. I don't think that translates to "people only like this game because it's a nintendo RPG." That isn't true. Even with a clunky battle system, it did things that JRPGs have only now started to do, and none as successfully.

I was kidding about that XD but the game definitely would go higher on my list if the system was better. I especially hate the forced battle tactics stuff they pull. "You HAVE to chain or else we cant win, Shulk!" Im not gonna pretend Im that far in the game, Im not. I got Ricky recently in it. But already there's been 2 or 3 battles where you have to use the chain to win. And I absolutely detest chaining in this game, its so awkward. The game would be in my top 10 games ever if that glaring issue of a battle system was fixed, or at least streamlined better

Yeah, I mean I definitely think you need to finish the game because story is one of the biggest reasons people like this game and rate it so high. I don't really mind the chaining, but I guess I understand that point.

You should at least watch a let's play though lol you're missing out on some cool storytelling. By far the best I've ever experienced in a Nintendo game.

I agree SMO and BoTW seem poised to battle one another for best game of the year.

But a lot of people seem to be sleeping on the potential of Splatoon 2 to have a similar buzz or burn trajectory as the original. The install base is still sort of small but I know at least with Japan they will be loving this game for several months. Heck the original Splatoon didn't fall off the Japanese top 20 until after the unveiled a sequel was coming to Switch.

Got to play a bit of Mario Odyssey. Takes the best parts of Mario 64 and Galaxy with maybe a little dash of Banjo Kazooie. Large levels with lots of stuff to stumble upon, mixed in with more intensive platforming sections that are more galaxyish. The result is really great.

That being said, I have a hard time seeing anything but BOTW taking game of the year. Breath of the Wild is one of those rare games that really propels a genre forward. They obviously took a lot of notes with the style of open world games popular in the west, but took it a step further to create one of the most authentic feeling games ever. Everything in the game just works exactly as you would expect it to.. There are none of those fourth wall bending moments where it feels like an element is included solely for the sake of the player. Everything in the game serves the world and the experience in a natural way. BOTW will be influencing games for decades to come.

Of course, if Mario Odyssey, or any other game for that matter, comes along and is better than BOTW that's just great for gamers in general... but I don't see it happening.

Witcher 3

Oh yeah, there were a lot better RPGs in 2016 that deserved an award more than Witcher DLC did.

Well, that was the Game Awards so I guess they wanted to honored mainstream stuff as much as they could.

They probably didn't know about Bravely 2, Trails of Cold Steel II, #FE, or SMTIV: Apocalypse.

Luckily this year is full of Nintendo games that everybody knows about. I was shocked when Splatoon got shooter of the year, because it was a new IP on a failing Nintendo system of all things.

Zelda has more chance than Mario. It's a series that even hardcore nintendo haters can like because it's not ''a kiddo game". It has the best mix of critical reception and commercial success and open world games are incredibly popular these days meanwhile platformer games are too specific. I don't even recall a platformer winning GOTY since 1996.

Mario Galaxy actually won quite a few game of the year awards. Not unanimous but several large publications like Gamespot gave it the nod.
