Forums - Gaming Discussion - The Xbox One X is a great value and expensive simultaneously

As the group of people willing to upgrade dries up, sales will go down. The ps4 slim will get an even more mass market friendly price, the ratio will likely stay the same. It won't be any different for XBox One S and X.

Except if the Pro is $299 (a very mass market price), especially if the Slim is still $199, there are going to be more people willing to upgrade.  Or upgrade if they are shopping for a 2nd PS4.  Or even new PS4 consumers.  Sure most will stick with the Slim, that will never change.  But, a $299 price for the best PS4, when someone has already decided to go PS4, is going to be very alluring.

So many IFs...

You are looking for a group of people that

1) own a PS4 and spent more than $249 for it (lowest price yet)
2) weren't convinced to upgrade yet
3) want a 2nd PS4 more than a (first) Switch or (first) Xbox One (S/X)
4) Wait for a pricecut to happen

That might be a very small target audience, don't you think?

No doubt that a PS4 Pro price cut will increase their sales.
But that will come hand in hand with a price cut for the regular PS4 as well, so the ratio will stay the same or will be even smaller IMO.

I think that current PS4 owners that don't own a Pro yet and want to upgrade to 4k  (because they bought a new TV and need content for it for example) are more likely to upgrade to Xbox One X than a PS4 Pro, because they will get a whole new library to play. And a 4k BluRay player. But again, that is a VERY small group of people.

Imagine not having GamePass on your console...

Yep, in terms of hardware I think the value of what you get is fine.
In terms of actual improved performance over the PS4pro in games? im not so sure.

And yep 499$ is a steep asking price.

"Microsoft is in a deeper hole. Unlike Sony, they didn't have a very successful handheld. Also, they already have a cheaper version. Sony's current Pro version is also $100 cheaper, and can most likely take a $50 price cut. The One X can't- it's gaining little to no profit per unit sold. This is a big issue. "

Yep 349$ vs 499$ and both do "4k" via checkerboarding.
Its a no brainer which most consumers will pick up in stores.

And thats without even mentioning the marketing rights playstation has, and the exclusive library. Things that could also effect which a consumer picks. I dont think Xbox One X will do much combat the sales of the PS4.

nope

Nioh and several others on PS4Pro are Native 4K. That doesn't change the fact that most PS4Pro games and the majority of what MS showed for OneX use checkerboarding. Checkerboarding is pretty much the standard for 4k console gaming right now it seems.

There's also the people that don't own a PS4 yet and will opt for the best version of the console. Those exist. You should list them.

Don't PC gamers buy a new $600 GPU every 6 months? :p
The difference is, you 'upgrade' your console, now you have two! It's cheaper to upgrade your PC though, if you don't go crazy.

It would be great value with another 6 to 10 year support for XbOX, yet what's going to happen with this gens refreshes when next gen starts remains to be seen. Ofcourse the ones buying these refershes don't expect to use them for 6 years, they'll be ready to upgrade again in another 2 or 3 years. The general consumer will simply buy the base version.

How often does a typical user even update their graphics card? I wonder if Steam has statistics on what types of graphics cards people use

For me I updated it after 5 years. And that was because it failed. Plus I also only got the 770. When the 970 was brand new. So it wasn't expensive. On top fo which my PC was built 6 years ago. it was a bit under $1200. But that was over 6 years. And it's used for my job. I've saved money. VS consoles that have to be upgraded every so often. If you want it to look the best. Haven't really ran into issues at all. I also don't care about 4K. So that doesn't get factored into my system.

A common misconception for those with little knowledge of PC gaming. Really, its not. It really depends on your budget and what you are aiming for.

While consoles have a lower starting cost.. once you start looking at the big picture, over the course of the generation.. they can end up being costing you considerably more than the PC counterpart. After all the; subscriptions, accessories and games you pay for on said console/s.

Also, PC's can last many generations if you pick your parts smartly. For instance, you could have an old Intel Sandy Bridge PC from 2013, and that system is relevant today. All you would need to do it swapout the GPU and it should be able to handle any game you throw at it.

With that last statement, try EXTREMELY small group, almost nonexistent.  You also left out those who are new to PS4, which there are probably going to be 10s of millions of them in the next 3 years.  When the Pro drops to $299, that's going to have quite the appeal.

And it has A LOT less to do about the ratio and to do with the actual price.  People don't take time to calculate ratio.  They'll look at a PS4 Slim for $199 and a Pro for $299.  Most will still get the $199 one.  However, there is going to be a sizeable chunk that spend the extra $100, since $299 is a good price for the better versions of all PS4 games.

And Boost Mode has its own appeal, as well.  I know that, personally.  I was just going to wait til the price cut this year to get a Pro.  But, once they announced Boost Mode, I couldn't wait, so I got one a few weeks ago.  Of course, I sold my normal PS4 to help go towards that, so I only spent like $299 on it.  At a mass market price, there are going to be a lot more people swayed by it.

Yea I didn't think I'd upgrade but then I decided to sell of my gaming PC and just stick with my PS4. So I got a PS4 pro and selling off my video card and old PS4 will more than cover for it.

Xbox One X is pretty good value, sony made a profit on the ps4 pro if I remember correctly and microsoft isn't on the Xbox One X it also offers a much better memory bus, memory bandwith, amount of memory and the most powerfull processor and cpu in any other console.

All great things and since its an optional console it can't really be to expensive since people not willing to pay this much for a console can just pick up a xbox, ps4 or switch for a lower price.

Its always good to see more options and the xbox one X is really for people who want to play on console and don't want to buy a high end pc or for people who already own an xbox like it and want to spent money to play all their games better.

I was never tempted to buy a ps4 pro since I didn't think it added much and wasn't worth it and many people will feel the same with this console but when I see how many people enjoy/like their ps4 pro I am very happy for these people sony decided to make an upgraded version and I don't feel it impacted by experience on my launch ps4 at all.

That's the point I'm trying to make. Chances are, if you're a hardcore Xbox fan, you're likely going to invest in all three of the Xbox One models. and probably an elite controller too. That adds up, even with trade-ins. If you really intend to be cream of the crop, a PC would have been a better investment since the parts are modular and you can change what you want anytime. I completely understand that going with a console is much easier for lots of people. but arguing that PC is more expensive is kind of moot if you're a diehard Xboxer.
