I get it- people are struggling to build a PC as strong as the Xbox one X for $500. Yes, I understand it also has a 4k player, vapor chamber cooling, and a free pass of xbox live.
The truth is that the Xbox One X is an amazing deal. Even if everything isn't native 4k, you still are receiving the best bang-for-buck currently. However, this means little in the end.
I'm sure we all remember the PS3. It had this complicated CELL processor, ps2 support, a blu-ray drive, and wi-fi built in (the 360 didn't). This was badass, until we all saw the $599 pricetag. To make it worse, the PS3 was being sold at a loss. Sony eventually lost billions until they turned it around and made a more affordable (and slimmer) version.
Microsoft is in a deeper hole. Unlike Sony, they didn't have a very successful handheld. Also, they already have a cheaper version. Sony's current Pro version is also $100 cheaper, and can most likely take a $50 price cut. The One X can't- it's gaining little to no profit per unit sold. This is a big issue.
As much as we can go on about how it's the greatest value, a $499 console simply isn't feasible. Even if it had some magical, revolutionary new feature (which it doesn't), it'd be close to impossible to try to gain any traction out of it.
Even the Switch, which brought forward the hybrid concept, was criticized for being $299. Now imagine a mid-gen upgrade being $499 and failing to bring its biggest promise- true, native 4k gaming?
The Switch is in its own market, so it matters little to the One X (along with PC). The Playstation however is just a nail to the coffin. The PS4 can continue to get cheaper as it stands with its versatile gaming library. I don't see te One X doing well in the long run. I'm sure it being near Christmas/Black Friday time will make it sell, but I can see the PS4/Switch doing well. Once Christmas season is over, I'm not exactly sure how well it will do.
