Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Xbox One X PC Build: Can you do it for $500?

It's a great deal, but only if you prioritise 4k over higher framerates. Even the FX8300 can manage 60fps in most scenarios. I'm sure the One X could too if it was a priority. Those Jaguar cores do suck massively though.

That Atom is using secondary processors (Namely the video block on the integrated GPU) to offload HD video, Youtube, Flash video etc'.
Or if you were like me with an older Atom (Think: GMA 950/3150 era atoms) you chucked a Broadcom Crystal HD into the mini PCI-E slot of the Atom tablet to do that task instead. Otherwise watching HD video was impossible.

An Athlon X2, if it's the first generation Athlon X2 is actually a bit faster than Atom... And unlike Atom and Jaguar was a high-end CPU once upon a time. Albeit, it's extremely dated now.
Running 7th gen games isn't entirely impossible on that chip. But more modern games would fall flat.

Jaguar is the successor to Brazos an Intel Atom competitor. You aren't running high-end games on it. It's low-end, slow and old.
And no, I won't "give it a rest" because I don't believe I am wrong.

****

Fact is. Running any flash/HTML 5/Element heavy website on Jaguar is a freaking chore. Especially on the consoles where rendering time is long.

It's a terrible and low-end CPU. Don't agree with that? Then sorry to say, but... Stiff.

Mmmhmmm... looking at benchmarks the Jaguar processors seem fairly capable.

You're arguing they're useless junk. I'm aruging, they're fine for budget processors with GPU focus. The APUs in consoles just happen to be superior than the PC market gets.

Can I get some links to them playing modern games on PC? I am curious...

Me too. Benchmarks of it running demanding modern games please.

What I always find retarded about these comparisons is, each individual component is priced as per it's individual packaged price, which includes a sales tax and retailer markup for every single component, too, as well as adding in non-essential parts like optical drives and such.

Then conveniently neglect to compare the fact that when all is said and done you end up with a multifunctional computer that can run applications, run home brew, be used for development on it's own, has no enforcement over how you use it, works with steam etc.
Compared to a box that is restricted and does little else than play games and stream video.

Sooooo PC > Consoles?

I did a little research, there are PC Jaguar CPUs running similar GHz as consoles. So they're fine for PCs as well. Eitherway, if you bought a device with a gaming focused APU, than GPU power is more important than CPU power.

I think there is an audience looking for a simple box that's reasonably priced and essentially runs current PC games at decent settings, like at par with modern consoles. I mean look at all the options for pre built gaming PCs, there is a market. I thought Steam machines was gonna be the answer for that but it wasn't, still expensive.

The answer is not buying a completely new PC every time you upgrade. If you just take a 4 year old PC and switch out the GPU with a $400 one you already have a better PC for a cheaper price.

Just because consoles force you to replace all of your hard and software with an upgrade doesn't mean PCs have to. There are plenty of components that last multiple console generations.

400$ is cheaper? The console alone cost as much, and it wont even run better because your old CPU will bottleneck your graphicscard which is pretty wasetfull.

I would much rather buy a new XBox One for 100$ more, getting also a 4K bluray player and saving some hardrive space on my PC for porn etc.

That's what I was thinking. If you already own PC with decent mobo and psu, the upgrade would cost you around $350 - $400

Any update on comparable builds?

I was browsing pc parts picker Canada for a bit and it's kinda useless. Most of the completed builds I checked are actually incomplete and have missing prices for components. I tried recreating a pre build machine and get incompatibility warnings. While my attempt is CAD 144 cheaper (1266 vs 1399 after mail in rebates), including shipping from 5 different retailers and adding the still missing bits, I doubt it actually ends up being less. And that's while choosing all the lowest priced options.

What I don't get is that all pre build PCs seem to pair an expensive cpu with a lower end gpu. While in this thread the consensus seems to be that you're better off with a much less capable cpu? With the I7-7700 being the most expensive cpu on pc parts picker, why do pre-build gaming pcs go for the i7 instead of a better gpu?

I have a hard time getting under CAD 1000 on PC parts picker, it will be hard to match the xbox one x. Or perhaps an I3 is enough? (was trying i5) The GTX 1060 6GB alone is CAD 360, plus Win 10 that's CAD 480, leaves 120 for the rest. XBox One X is CAD 599 here.

The XBox One X is CAD 37 less than the exchange rate would suggest. With pc parts it's usually the other way around, so it will be especially hard to match it in Canada. MS is giving Canadians a deal. (A CAD 637 or even 649 console would never sell of course)

Deus Ex (2000) - a game that pushes the boundaries of what the video game medium is capable of to a degree unmatched to this very day.

The thing is more complicated then the most people are thinking. Perhaps you get the Hardware Power of a XOneX for theese 500 bucks but you will never get it with the comfort, Wifi etc. The other problem is the heat that a fx8300 is producing , i think the XOneX will run with 50° max under full load a pc with the fx8300 dont will run so smooth i tried it with a Dark Rock 2 Pro for a friend , he could play but after 1-2 hours his system got heat problems.......... he had 2 fan for the casis too so normally it should run.! if you wanna have a cool pc with the cpu power you have to take a good i5 @ ~ 200 Eur ( im from europe) the same problem you ahve with the graphics card if you wanna close your case after a half year later then you got this pc you cant buy the cheapest graphics card then you have to spend a little bit more 300+ eur, so you see if you wanna have a cool and silent system you need min 450 Eur only for the cpu and grapics card and because of this the Xbox One X is a very good deal not only for the price. We know also that Microsoft is a Master of Optimisation at their games!

Last time I checked $400 is cheaper than $500. And for that saved $100 you can get a 3TB drive for all your porn.

Any regular mainstream CPU from 2013 outperforms the X1 CPU by miles. CPUs haven't been bottlenecking PCs since 2010.
