What kind of games do you like?

Consider the possibility of buying both. If you're willing to sacrifice the clam shell, you can get a refurbished 2DS and Vita TV for $60 each.

both suck

Google "Best 3DS games"

Sold yet?

"You should be banned. Youre clearly flaming the president and even his brother who you know nothing about. Dont be such a partisan hack"

My experience with recent 3DS games (pokemon) is that they seem to have mostly dropped the 3D feature. So its basically an high spec DS

Don't buy any of those .. buy a PS4 or a Switch

Well it's still hard to recommend either of those two

Vita is an alright console, it's just extremely lacking in most types of games. If you like some really niche stuff (especially visual novels), then it would probably be alright, but other wise there's not many games worth playing on it.

As for 3DS... well the only reason I bought one is for Pokemon, and you've already said you don't like Pokemon and I don't have anything else to recommend it for

I'm reeeeaaallllyyyy struggling to understand this viewpoint, especially when your point is "buy a Switch".

Vita is lacking in most types of games except niche stuff. Yet it still has more niche stuff; console-quality-on-the-go stuff; AA stuff and indie stuff than Switch is likely to have at any point in the next 12 months. Switch's future is brighter, but buy one when it's actually got the games you want rather than it's getting Metroid Prime at some point in the next 3 years, lol.

I mean "there's not many games worth playing on it" is exactly why it's in the state it's in. People look at it and think "oh it has no games" because that's been the internet rhetoric for 6 years, but anyone willing to dig underneath will find a fantastic library of games full of varied titles.  I alone could make 50 recommendations straight off the bat that I've written articles about:

Plus, Vita's strongest point is if you have any capacity for nostalgia or playing older games, then it's a fantastic console between PS1 classics; PSP games and PS2 games on the go.

Its weak point is obviously that a lot of its library is shared with PS4 & PS3, so if you own either of those consoles then the main selling point has to be that you want a portable to play games on, rather than a home console. For me, that's an easy choice because I much prefer portability, but it's not going to be for everyone and some people prefer performance boosts; big screen gaming and just all the general perks with home consoles.

3DS I won't even get into - I don't own one, but even I can tell that its library is a hell of a lot more than Pokemon :P

I know you said don't recommend a Switch, buuuuut...I recommend a Switch

Switch is going to be a WiiU + 3DS + Vita (minus Sony first-party games) so it will satisfy both worlds.

But I understand you want to work through the catalogs of either 3DS or PSV.

I've had great experiences on both platforms. I guess a lot depends on your taste in games. If you're big into indies, visual novels, turn-based RPGs, and Japanese games in general, I think Vita could be a good fit. If you're more into platformers, action-adventure games, strategy RPGs, puzzle games, and dungeon crawlers, then 3DS might be a good fit. For me, Nintendo's first-party content is what gives 3DS a big leg up over Vita, but if you're not crazy about Super Mario, Animal Crossing, Fire Emblem, Zelda, Kirby, Pokemon, and Mario Kart then it's a moot point.

Since I can't be sure which platform you'll get, here's a list of cool games available on both :)

Retro City Rampage
Virtue's Last Reward
Severed
Shovel Knight

No!

I mean... get both.

Lol... seriously, it depends on your tastes. I like stuff the Vita has like the Ys games, dangarompa, Trails of cold stell, Tales of Hearts R, Persona 4, Zero series (though its on 3DS aswell), Fighters like MK9, Injustice, SFxT, UMvC3 and Digimon. Theres loads of less known but decent RPG's and lots of hunting games if you like that. (remember that most of the PSP library is available aswell).

The 3DS is mostly for Nintendo stuff. So, if youre into classic Zelda, pokemon and bad Fire emblem games (yeah i went there! Havent played echoes yet though.), its for you.

I got them both myself (felt the need to mention cause i'm sure a nintendo fan is gonna jump me for having an opinion and call me fanboy of something).

Interested to hear if and when you do get Fire Emblem Echoes, only because since it's a remake of older entry (even though it never came to the west in the first place) it might have a chance of being more to your taste. Although the original is said to be the black sheep of the franchise with the exploration aspect.

Yeah i dunno. I'm on the fence. Got a horrible aftertaste of the grind and breeding fests that awakening and fates were. I would like a more story driven game with substance and less cliche. Gaiden/Echoes i am sure delivers in the plot better than recent games just because of that. But the smaller battles and dungeon grinding i heard of don't have me eager to jump in. I dunno... i got so much stuff to play atm that it might just fall through. I confess i am curious though.

I didn't expect this kind of massive response to this thread (thanks!).

Some answers to some of the questions:

  • My favorite genres would be RPG & Action adventures. I like platformers and the occassional shooter or VN as well, though.. and I am open to all genres, anyway. (niche is not really a genre per say, but I am into niche titles as well)
  • I can't really get into many Nintendo games - Zelda and Pokemon for example would tip the scales in favor of 3DS (heavily)! if only yours truly liked them. Love Mario though.
  • If things continue in the manner of Nintendo E3 2017, a switch is coming down the line - however, I rarely (meaning: never) buy hardware near launch. For now, it'll have to wait.
  • I have a PS4 Pro, cancelling many Vita titles and a lot of my time
Huge thanks to the persons posting the 3DS lists & video. The problem with that one, well, is that there are too many games to filter what I would like sometimes. But all that SMT goodness on one platform... plus other Atlus titles.. plus Mario.. yep.

I am honestly convinced to get both. But considering VIta is indeed in its twlight years, I will probably put it up first - support is dwindling, only gonna get harder and more expensive to get things / games for it from now on. 3DS - later (prob 2018) purchase, definetely. Especailly now that new hardware will be out of it - I don't really care about 3D, and missed the announcement for 2DS XL, which sounds great.

@Veknoid Outcast: A Vita is a Vita without Sony FP games (yeah, I know I should be kicked for that).
@d21lewis: My meaning with that Vita > PS3 thing was directed more at the content offered in the Vita releases.
@Everyone posting game recommendations - thanks!
Keep it coming.

Buy a switch or wait for PSexp. There is a rumour about a Ps Handheld as strong as the PS4.
