So then...

I would like to buy a new portable system (even if neither of the ones mentioned are truly new, but they are new to me! ), and cannot decide between a Vita and 3DS.

There are pros to each - I consider the following important:

Vita:

  • Nice piece of hardware, can play my PSP games.
  • Remote play with PS4.
  • Many superior versions of older PS3 games, a liiiiiitle bit of nice exclusives.
  • ...otherwise, few big titles, few exclusives, etc. it's a real problem in deciding to splurge a large sum of cash. I am not interested in most ports, which seem to be a huge chunk of Vita's better games.
3DS:
  • Many more genuinely exclusive games!
  • Good, strong design. Clamshell is a pro for me.
  • Shin Megami Tensei titles.
  • Allows girlfriend to use it to play Pokemon (I don't like Pokemon, however).
  • ...however, lacklustre online infrastrcuture, no compatiblity within my.. ecosystem I guess.
I have to say, that I find either one to be a bleak shadow of either the PSP or the DS, which is why this decision is so hard for me - I can easily afford both, just don't have time for both at the same time... therefore, I need this community to convince me into buying either one. I like just about any genre, so you have a good range to use to convince me.
Thanks

...don't recommend a Switch, reason why can be seen two posts below =P

Do consider the pricepoint, as well. The new 2DS xl costs 150$ and you can get an old 2DS + a game for 100$, while the newer vita models are closer to 200$, not to speak of extremely expensive peripherials (60$ memory cards...)

Yes, Vita new is $200. But you fail to mention all models that are currently out now have internal memory. Not much, only 1-5gb (forgot), but thats plenty enough if you intent to buy only physical. $60 is about what you'd pay for a 32gb mem card which most wouldn't even opt for anyway a used Vita can go for $150 and many of the games on it are less than $20 these days, especially among the best it has to offer.

I would recommend the Vita because I have 30 games on it ($20-30 for a game most of the time, great deals), including my 3 favorite games ever, and played it for hundreds if not thousands of hours. I also have the 3DS, and even got it before the Vita, but I only have 5 games, including a DS game (999), and finished only 2 of them, the console is just taking the dust (I didn't even bring it when going abroad to study).

It will mainly depend on the games you want. Look at both consoles libraries, and see what interests you the most. The rest is mostly irrelevant.

Really depends on your favorite game genres and franchises so why not do us and yourself a favor by listing some?
Overall though, the 3DS has more to offer in the games department across most genres. If your interested in homebrew and emulation, both have pretty good soft-modding communities, with the Vita being more limited by your firmware and the 3DS needing to be one of the "New" 3DS models to flourish.

If you ask people what games you should like and play then you are doing something wrong.

Intel Core i7 8700K | 32 GB DDR 4 PC 3200 | ROG STRIX Z370-F Gaming | RTX 3090 FE| Crappy Monitor| HTC Vive Pro :3

Get a Switch. Its portable and far newer than either of those devices and will actually have new games coming out on it.

But if you compare lower limits, you can get a regular 2ds for around 70$.

Bet with PeH:

I win if Arms sells over 700 000 units worldwide by the end of 2017.

Bet with WagnerPaiva:

I win if Emmanuel Macron wins the french presidential election May 7th 2017.

get a switch, I'm not convincing you to buy the 3 consoles which I've stopped using since I got my Switch that would be unfair.

......

Okay to be fair the Vita screen is still excellent for porn, but yeah, Soon the Switch will get a browser!
