Forums - Gaming Discussion - What affect will MHW have on PS4 hardware in Japan?

Tagged games:

So anyone who has read my posts over the years might have noticed I often wished and hoped a mainline or spin off for Monster Hunter would hit the PS4. I want PS4 to hit 10M in Japan by the end of the gen to match the PS3 so when I looked at potential franchises that could assist it Monster Hunter was a no brainer. If it got a good spin off it could do over that MH could sell 500k+ imo and if it got a port of a mainline game even better. In my head the best case scenario was MH5 releasing on PS4 and a nintendo console. So in the case of the next main entry, Monster Hunter World the best i could hope for was a Switch/PS4 release.

In this scenario I'd probably expect MHW PS4 to sell over 750k.

But as we know MHW is PS4 exclusive in Japan. I could never have expected this best case scenario to occur. While I believe the Switch will get a port 6-12 months after it launches on the PS4 the fact is the full hype and power of a mainline MH will be going into the PS4 version at launch. And not only that but it's a major upgrade for the series with brand new assets.

With that in mind I think this is a million seller. Could do anything from 1m-2m. So that's a lot of people buying the game in Japan. I can't imagine most of them are already on PS4. So how  many PS4's will this game really sell. Could be permantly $249 by then too. I think in total between now and the weeks after the release of MHW about 700k MH fans will purchase PS4's.

What are your thoughts? What's the effect this title will have?

Think for yourself, question authority

I'd say a few 100k over its lifetime, more than a few if they bundle it at a good price. I think Dragon Quest XI will have a bigger immediate impact on the PS4's Japanese sales to be honest, but probably not as much of an impact in the long term.

The game will probably sell about 1-1.25 million lifetime in Japan (with price drops), similar to Monster Hunter Tri, but it will sell more PS4s than Tri did Wiis because the Wii already had 10 million sales in Japan when Tri released.

I think it will have a small impact when opening the pre-order of MHW (in Japan) and will have a big impact on the launch of the game (in Japan).

We need to know when it releases and to see how the PS4 is doing at that time.

Not much. But I predict a 100% spike in 3DS sales out of spite.

Also *effect

If you demand respect or gratitude for your volunteer work, you're doing volunteering wrong.

But I could only see a bit. By bit I mean on launch day the PS4 will reach 40 - 50k. Very small legs though compared to the 3DS.

And I can see it doing 500kLT in Japan.

But we'll see.

Should push a decent amount of numbers, nothing crazy but definitely one of those games that will sell PS4s over there.
