Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Reggie on why Metroid Prime 4 was announced so early

Good decision. Because that saved e3!

Now please also announce Animal Crossing for the Switch!

Other have been criticised in the past for announcing titles way too early.  This is exactly the same.

Although I predicted it would be announced so I'm not complaining.  Love being proved right!

Who wants to bet it'll release before FFVIIR or KH3?

Why would I take a bet where the only possible outcome is defeat?

Because we need hype beyond 2017.

Please excuse my (probally) poor grammar

Because gambling is fun

Bet with bluedawgs: I say Switch will outsell PS4 in 2018, he says PS4 will outsell Switch. He's now permabanned, but the bet will remain in my sig.

As others have said, I'm sure it was done to appease the Metroid Prime fans who would be angry about Metroid: Samus Returns. It was done so that Nintendo could show that they were listening to them as well and not just the 2D Metroid fans. Either way, I still don't agree with super early game announcements and I don't approve of this one either, but whatever.

Nintendo absolutely had to announce Metroid Prime 4. This isn't about throwing the gauntlet down at Sony, Microsoft, or their respective fanbases. This was about keeping the Nintendo fans from pulling out trhe pitchforks. Trust me...we can do more damage on the internet to the Nintendo brand than Sony or Microsoft fans could ever dream.

As a massive Metroid fan, there's no way I could be angry about Samus Returns (I wasn't even angry about Federation Force...I just didn't buy it). I still would have been a happy camper if all they announced was the 3DS game. But I'm glad they did it the way they did it. Give us a true 2D Metroid game and leave us with a teaser for the future Prime game. I see no issues with this.

Because it would be a giant shit show if they had shown Metroid only for 3DS and said nothing about Switch.

"Motherfuck fuck Nintendo, they fucked us on Federation Force, now they're giving the six year old 3DS another Metroid and no fucking Metroid Prime 4 for Switch?! Fuck this!" etc. etc. etc.

There'd be more F bombs than a Beyond Good & Evil trailer.

I don't think this game is coming out before 2019 it's probably right at the beginning of development.

It's not just about 2D vs. 3D - if anything, most Metroid fans love both -, it's about having a big new game for the Switch. If they only announced a 3DS game, even if it was 3D, it would show Nintendo has no ambition for the franchise anymore.

That's probably true.  I guess I'm in the minority where I love 2D Metroid, but kinda hate 3D Metroid.

I remember a while back when Nintendo took a shot at Sony for announcing stuff years in advanced.

but we have no idea how far in development Metroid Prime 4 is, we only know that it's not far along yet for them to feel comfortable displaying gameplay. A lot of the meat could be there already for all we know.

And it depends on what 'early' means in this case. A year? two years? more? we'll just have to see.
