Curious question.

So far PS4 is selling gangbusters and shrinking the gap between 3DS really fast.

But Nintendo won't give up easily. They now announced a new model and a respectable lineup for the rest of the year. With holidays coming, it is obvious that we will see many incredible deals for its handheld, wich is already reaching a comfortable price zone for late adopters and families that want gifts for their young relatives.

What are your predictions for the time that will take for the PS4 finally reach the top spot of the 8 gen console sales?

Numbers for a better estimate:

Vgchartz has 3DS and PS4 at 64.6 M and 58 M units sold respectively as April 29th

Sony has just announced at E3 that they have sold 60.4 M PS4 units since its release.http://www.express.co.uk/entertainment/gaming/816593/PS4-games-news-Sony-sales-figures-E3-2017

With NFD, Nintendo had shipped 66.12 M 3DS units as of March 31.https://www.nintendo.co.jp/ir/en/finance/hard_soft/index.html

two years from now, 2019 holiday, if they don't launch ps5 by 2020, which is unlikly.

They're forecasting 78m shipped by March 2018, so before then.

They shipped 7.27m 3ds's last fiscal year, so even if they remain completely flat (not going to happen) by March it'd be 73.39m 3ds, 78m PS4.

I think the Switch is stealing some of the 3DS's thunder but it still has some system selling titles on the way (Ultra Pokemon, Samus Returns) I don't know the release date of those so I have to imagine before the end of the year it will happen.

Is this even a question?

If the PS4 doesn't surpass 3DS by the end of the year something is really going wrong at Sony.

A handheld gamer only (for now).

I see. I wasn't aware about 3ds shipments, so that will be pretty much this. Beginning of 2018

Ultra is November and Samus September.

I don't think switch is doing a significant damage for 3ds, both are appealing for different segments of the console market.

Edit: forgot to add New 2ds release date, I think it's between June and July depending of the region

Didn't the 3ds launch in 7th gen and not 8th?

Nope, unless you consider Vita a 7 gen console.

Wii was the last 7 gen console and it released 5 years before the 3ds. Pretty late to enter in the 7 gen party,  don't  you think?

Vgchartz also agrees with me.
