Forums - Sony Discussion - Do you reckon the PS5 will be boring?

A full VR system. By 2020 this will be affordable. Sony will program from the start for it.

Bundling VR like MS did with Kinect would definitely make things less boring.

Don't Play Stationary 4 ever. Switch!

With some of the issues with PlayStation Pro and some of the false hype off the Xbox One X, I can imagine the PlayStation 5 taking it even to it further level. That plus integrating virtual reality and most of their titles. I see it being good.

This.

As we’ve heard before, Sony seems very interested in artificial intelligence, and using it to create believable virtual characters.

Mallinson spoke about ‘natural language understanding’, which he compared to voice operated platforms like Apple’s Siri, Amazon Echo. “Imagine you could use that to actually talk to game characters, to actually have a dialogue,” he said.

Building on that, the company’s also interested in affecting the virtual world around you with gaze tracking. Mallinson spoke about using the direction the player was looking to change the virtual world around them. You might stare at a character, for example, who might become uncomfortable after continued surveillance. Note his wording doesn’t specifically say eye-tracking, which would give games more accurate info about where a user is looking, but would require an upgrade on the hardware front.

Mallinson isn’t ruling out hardware upgrades though. He also spoke about VR displays, and the importance of integrating focus variation to simulate our real world vision.

“What we want to do is we also want to bring that in so we have re-focusing in virtual reality,” Mallinson added. He said that, in the future, he believes headsets will be able to deliver both focus variation and 3D images. “That will give us the ultimate visual experience,” he said.

Finally, Mallinson looked far into the future with a concept he said was “almost in the realm of science fiction”: brain wave interfaces. With tech that could read the most basic impulses in your brain there’s a world of possibilites for VR.

PS5 with gen 2 VR, it won't be boring.

Unique selling does not mean best way of playing, nor is it needed if the system has the best library of the gen.

Plus, if you want unique selling point, there's always VR and PlayLink.

I hope so. I don't want my gaming excitement to come from the box that plays my games. Make it good at doing the things it's supposed to do, but otherwise...fuck off.

If I buy a toaster, I want it to be good at making toast. I don't want a hip new way to make toast, just make the fucking toast.

Bet with Adamblaziken:

I bet that on launch the Nintendo Switch will have no built in in-game voice chat. He bets that it will. The winner gets six months of avatar control over the other user.

Nope, Sony hasn't deviated from its philosophy yet, they're going to keep doing them because well...it works almost every time. I'm the type of person who loves to see new things so Nintendo doing what they're doing, it keeps the industry fresh. I can't imagine an industry where the only innovations are more specs, talk about boring. I love PS for the constant good games but Nintendo breaks up the monotony for me which is why I'm generally a fan of both.

That being said I fully expect Sony to copy the Nintendo Switch within the next 2 years. They'll 1up the Switch and still manage to sell below it.

Where does this idea that Sony only offers a single type of gaming come from? Have people forgotten PS VR already?

Sony didn't invent VR to the extent we have it today...or have it out the gate. It's an addon, an addon that's still very niche. In terms of entertainment or types of gaming, VR really hasn't caught on yet. Sure PSVR is over the 1M mark but even Virtual Boy sold 770k when everything was said and done and it had absolute shit games. The meat and potatoes of Sony has ben its core predictable experience. And there's nothing wrong with that, it works. PSVR is just not what people think it is. It's great tech, it deserves more than it gets but very few and far between concur.

the only question is if they will be scared off of VR for two reasons

1.  Not every game, especially 3rd parties, will use it

2. Kinect jacking up the price of X1 and hurting them may make Sony hesistant to include it with every system

I think they'll offer a base model $400 and then a VR model for significantly more.

I am Iron Man

The console itself will probably be what you consider boring, but the PS4 as well has stuff like PSVR, which certainly isn't "boring" (in the sense that it's tried and true).
