Forums - Gaming Discussion - A ton of new Monster Hunter World details (PS4/XB1/PC)

What's weird to me is that there are only 5m PS4's in Japan. If this is the future of MH, Capcom literally just screwed over Japan for the West.

That being said, Switch is doing worse in Japan than in US or EU, so that might explain things.

Either way, it's clear Capcom hopes to trade those 4m 3DS units in Japan to 4m + everywhere but Japan. Maybe this will boost PS4 sales dramatically in Japan. Will be interesting to follow.

I think the fans will still come, but it makes no sense for them to put it on consoles in Japan, they're a dying breed. I guess they just don't like easy money.

I'm less worried but it still feels like they screwed over Nintendo fans to make this happen

The fanbase in Japan dont care about brands. Reactions seem to be largely positive if youtube is anything to go by. The 4m+ players are mostly true fans who had it on PSP. Who are looking for a good experience regardless of the system. Although portability and local multiplayer is probably a big factor why the series is big to begin with, this will prove much more detrimental for MH World than PS4's install base which could otherwise easily grow like PSP's...

Dragon Quest and Monster Hunter fans shouldn't be mixed with "Nintendo fans" There is a reason why PS4 DQXI is outperforming 3DS version in preorders.

I wasn't mixing Nintendo fans with MH fans I'm sure there are a lot of Mh fans that are going to make the jump to the ps4 just like they jumped from the ps2 to the PSP, Wii and 3ds but as someone that greatly preferres this series on handhelds and isn't a fan of a lot of the changes they're making to cater to Western audiences mh world coupled with the lack of commitment for a XX localization feels really sketchy. This is probably how tomb raider fans felt when rise was xb1 exclusive even though the series was popularized on Sony hardware. i have a ps4 and I may still end up with this but still it left a bad taste in my mouth.

Maybe seeing Monster hunter look like this changes things.... this could be a big boost to PS4 sales in japan.

Can you tell a differnce?

vs

-snip-

Yes, one of them is ingame and the other one is pre-rendered.

The 2nd image is indeed CG, but the real-time jump is still phenomenal. Unfortunately I've never had much interest in the series though, so it's not a jump i'll personally get to enjoy :p

MHW will help give PS4 a stronger presence in Japan so that the following MH game can be made on both Switch and PS4 with higher production values and market acceptance.

Also your comparison to Tomb Raider is somewhat flawed because MH started on PS2 and was popularized on PSP, not 3DS.

Ok then I guess a better example would be bayonetta except without the justification that the game never would have been made if it didn't become exclusive.

"You can play offline."

I couldn't help but laugh at that. These last two gens have done a number on single players offline games.

Obviously, but all the pictures he could choose from he took the 3DS one (not even taking the Switch into account) and compared it to pre-rendered one :/

I have no issues with better visuals. But I thought that the game mostly sold best on handheld devices. That's why I think it's odd that they are going for home systems.

Even Monster Hunter Tri sold better on the 3DS than on the Wii where the Wii had the bigger installbase. So, because the game is way more popular in Japan, PC and Xbox won't get high sales there. The only device that's left is PS4.

I would go even further by predicting that the Switch version of Monster Hunter XX will sell better than the PS4 version of Monster Hunter World in Japan.

Here are the followups too, which answer your questions.

This is interesting. Clearly some things have changed if this is true, which I believe it is. World seems much less watered down than this describes, though monster hunter fans will know better than I do.

This clarifies that MHXX on switch is separate from MH Portable, though. That's interesting. Looks like Capcom will be getting the best of both worlds.

What a fascinating potential look at the underbelly of the gaming industry.

Indeed. Monster Hunter has a history a backroom dealings. Not surprised at all for Sony to have paid to specifically exclude Nintendo.

As I've talked about with others, Switch won't get blackballed completely. I don't get the notion that MH World will be a big flop for Capcom though.

It was Sony who has screwed over Nintendo fans. The same way Nintendo screwed over Sony fans earlier with MH Tri and the 3DS games.

The jump to Nintendo always sounded like it was Capcom's choice, like they simply preferred to release the series on Wii and later the 3ds. World and this XX ordeal feels like a huge dick move by Sony and Capcom is going along for the ride. Stuff like this needs to stop happening, it was shitty when tomb raider did it, it was shitty when street fighter did it and now it's shitty when monster hunter did it

It was not. Nintendo and Capcom made a deal for Tri, and Nintendo even published the game in the west I think.

F2P is a must! Only then it has a chance of survival.

I don't see it being a flop, but it remains to be seen if it can measure up to japan sales.
