Retro is not the same studio that it used to be. Metroid got picked up by a new studio in Retro with Metroid Prime and it was amazing. I do not have a problem with a new studio working on the title. As long as it stays a FPS, or FPA rather, keeps the themes and has the same director then there is hope. My one worry is that we have had some elements that do not feel Metroid since MP1&2. I'm hoping those changes do not influence the direction. The feel of Breath of the Wild gives me hope though.

I hope MP4 becomes Metroid's own BoTW because I really don't see Metroid taking off in this day and age without being a non linear open world game. Metroid Prime is the game this new team should take as a basis and expand upon it just like BoTW expanded on the original Zelda and reinvented itself.

That would be a disaster.

The difference is that BOTW just took the fundemental aspects of Zelda and translated it to 3D. Doing that to metroid would not be an open world game at all. That's not what Metroid ever was.

I'm very ok with that, can't wait to see what new ideas the new team bring to the series.

Retro better not be working on a DK game tho

From a personal perspective, I want a 3D DK.

From a "what's good for Nintendo" perspective, I want a StarTropics reboot with a soundtrack by David Wise.

Metroid was also never supposed to be a linear first person adventure game with a focus on story and characters like Hunters and MP3. Sure they both had cool controls and characters but I really don't see them getting praise for taking this route in this generation filled with open world games.

Even Zelda got tons of flak before BoTW for being too linear and restrictive so if anything Metroid needs to take this route and evolve because linearity and weak storytelling just won't cut it.

Actually, the first Metroid was very much a non-linear open world game, just a different kind of open world. I'd really like to see a more non-linear take on Metroid Prime, as the linearity is my biggest issue with the otherwise amazing trilogy. Obviously I understand your natural defensive reaction to the "open world" trope, as it is an overused term and definitely an overused trend in gaming nowadays, but if it just means bigger and more open labyrinth, that's just what I want.

The whole reason the first metroid was made was to mix the linearity and platforming of mario with the exploration and action of Zelda. It was very much not a non-linear open world game.

But yeah, if it's a bigger labyrinth with way improved platforming, I'm fine with that. When games like Mirror's Edge exist, they have a lot of examples of how to improve prime's most critical flaw from a franchise perspective.

I'm really curious on what Retro Studio is actually working the past years.

Nothing shocking there, he was only credited as special thanks (advising role?) during Prime Trilogy, Tanabe is the main man for that franchise.

Thankfully Sakamoto is involved in Samus Returns since I really don't know what good to expect from Mercury Steam and he also mentioned that Samus Returns is not directly connected to "that other project" Metroid Dread... Can't fucking wait for that.

Doesn't he hate the Prime games?  Don't see why he'd want to be involved in it if that's the case.
