My concerns regarding this are twofold:

(1) I sincerely hope it hasn't been handed off to a subpar or unfitting developer.

(2) What on earth have Retro been doing for the last three and half years?

According to Nintendo, it's being handled by a completely new team, so very much like the Prime 1 situation being Retro's first game. Whether they're any good or not remains to be seen, but this looks like an ambitious project, I doubt they'll do it wrong.

As for Retro themselves, they're the ones I'm truly concerned about here. 3 and a half years seems like an awfully long time to make a game, let alone not even have one announced - I fear they might be no more.

There were rumors that they didn't get approval for their next project after Tropical Freeze until late 2014.  So, if that's true then it's more like 2 1/2 years so far.

I sincerely hope you're right. I freaking adore the Metroid Prime trilogy and the thought of a worthy modern successor makes me giddy with excitement. I'm just so scared of being let down.

I can't be bothered to be scared when there's still so much time to go and so little information about it. I'm just happy this day has come, and excited for what's to come. I'll save the disappointment for when the game is actually shown (doubt it'll be needed, though).

I just hope it does come out until 2019. That would already be a long ways away, but I'm afraid the way they revealed it, we might be looking at another Breath of the Wild here (well I guess if it turns out as good as that game, I don't even care, but still).

Yeah if this releases before 2019 I'll be shocked haha

This is amazing news to me because I've wanted Retro to work on their own IP for ages now, and if the game they're doing isn't Metroid I think it will be a new IP. Which would line up perfectly with why they had some trouble getting approval and why it's taking them so long. Maybe a lot of unexpected hiccups with their vision.

According to this site, Tropical Freeze sold very well (1.62 million), not super mega incredible, but very good numbers, especially considering Wii U's install base; so there's absolutely no way they don't exist anymore.

So I believe there are two possible scenarios:

1. The project they are working on is truly very ambitious and a new IP, so they can't show anything yet, and unlike Metroid or Pokemon, which are established franchises, Nintendo can't simple say "X new IP is in development". I mean of course they can do it, but it won't generate as much excitement as those other popular Nintendo IPs.

2. They have become a developer that helps in other projects, I think they have help Nintendo in some smaller titles (can't remember which ones though), which is a shame really if this is true.

The only other possibility I can think of (which I think is very farfetch) is that Retro is no longer a second party developer, and has become third party. I think that if this was the case we would have seen some information on it, but stuff like that I'm sure take time to make public.

Nintendo and PC gamer

I'm intrigued at the idea of the team developing two games at once. Maybe one is the "safe" project, like Donkey Kong, that's a well-established franchise with a fanbase. The other could be a complete roll of the dice--like reviving Raven Blade, or a dormant property like StarTropics, or a completely new IP. That way they'd cover both bases of giving something reliable to fans and offering something totally fresh.

Unfortunately this is all total speculation because whatever Retro is/was doing, Nintendo has kept it close to the chest.

I've been wanting the bolded for a while now.

Reardles Retro game, I think its holiday 2018. game, Nintendo definitely didn't showed or anancued everything they have for Switch, they saving some announcements for some of next NDs or next E3, but I any case I think that Retro game will be 2018. game, same goes for Next Levels Games game.

I don't mind as the game has the same producer the other Prime games had. I do wonder what Retro is up to, though. Did something go wrong? Did their latest project end up in development hell and will release no sooner than 2021? Or is everything going smoothly, they just transitioned the game from Wii U to Switch and it'll release in late 2018?

I hope Metroid Prime 4 will be ready for a late 2018 launch. Kirby and Yoshi are cool but not really my cup of tea and I've been waiting for a new Metroid Prime for a long time. (And btw: Screw that Metroid remake on 3DS, Nintendo! There was no reason not to release it on Switch!)

I actually want that so it'll be a legit trilogy. tropical freeze was a top 3 wii-u game for me.

Yeah that's what I thought. They're the DK crew at this point, we don't need any bananas in space.

Then.. what is Retro working on?!

I don't think we'll get another 2D DK for a long while - but rather this time a 3D DK with highly interactive environments and multiplayer.

I'm thinking BotW meets Crackdown meets Mario 3D world.

It makes sense to me - they are obviously trusted with the DK brand. Not something I'd let go of if I ran Retro. They're putting enough time and staff in to really make a fantastic game regardless of what it is.

I figure Nintendo would hold off on announcing the project so they could focus E3 on Mario Odyssey and also ensure Metroid fans were happy - they could get upset if they found out Retro wasn't making Metroid.

I predict NX launches in 2017 - not 2016

Retro is not the same studio that it used to be. Metroid got picked up by a new studio in Retro with Metroid Prime and it was amazing. I do not have a problem with a new studio working on the title. As long as it stays a FPS, or FPA rather, keeps the themes and has the same director then there is hope. My one worry is that we have had some elements that do not feel Metroid since MP1&2. I'm hoping those changes do not influence the direction. The feel of Breath of the Wild gives me hope though.
