Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Prediction: Mario Kart 9 won't release until a decade or more after MK8

So I was thinking about when the next Mario Kart might happen, and it occured to me that it's highly possible it could be a very long ways out. MK8D is pretty much the perfect Mario Kart game and it really makes no sense to release another one on Switch. It would be a big waste of dev time and resources since they can just keep adding new tracks and DLC to 8D throughout the Switch's lifetime to keep it somewhat fresh. I'm also assuming we won't get a 3DS successor since Switch is hybrid, so MK9 won't show up on a handheld. Switch should have at least a 5 year life cycle, maybe 6 if it's nearly on par with Wii's success. So that puts its successor out in 2022-2023. Mario Kart games have never been launch window releases, excluding MK8D since it was a port, so MK9 probably wouldn't show up until 12-24 months in the systems life span. So that puts the release around 2023-2025, a full decade or more after MK8. Another prediction tied into this is that Nintendo will indeed resurrect F-Zero on the Switch - maybe sometime around 2019-2020 - in order to have a racer to fill the long gap between MK releases.

Neh, NS will get an appropiate MK game, maybe later on it's lifespan, but it will get it. What I see is that they will break the formula they've been following in DS, Wii, 7 and 8, for something new, they made MK8 the perfect game, so they will look for new ways in the next one. I predict they'll do another Double Dash, but NS cannot live with a MK8 port, people will eventually get bored of it.

Cross-platform when Switch 2 comes out

Lol no. It will be announced next year.

But why add new DLC when you can charge for a full $60 game again?

It's fine for Nintendo to release a new one in a few years or else people will be screaming again how Nintendo releases too few games.

Because they can already charge $60 and then they will charge for additional DLC. And I would buy it. I don't see MK9 being much different from MK8D. I just want more tracks.

It's Nintendo, maybe they want to go in a different direction with the next MK? Who knows, maybe MK9 is a tactical RPG.

So far, it's one MK per device. A new one announced so recently after the release of MK8D would split the community or make MK8D obsllete too fast. I don't count on a next MK for the next 3-4 years.

I also don't believe in a genre change.

Not a decade but I can see MK9 being an early title the Switch's successor.

Is MK8D cross compatible online with the Wii U version?
