Forums - Microsoft Discussion - MS: Xbox One VR won't be at E3; won't be out this year

Microsoft won’t have any form of virtual reality for the Xbox One or Xbox Scorpio at E3 this year as the company continues its focus on VR for computers, officials tell Polygon.

And when VR does arrive on an Xbox console, potentially still next year, it sounds like it will be wireless.

“Our primary focus is making our mixed reality experiences a success on Windows 10 PCs,” Alex Kipman, technical fellow at Microsoft, told Polygon today. “We believe that right now a Windows PC is the best platform for mixed reality as its open ecosystem and enormous installed base offer the best opportunity for developers, and Windows offers the most choices for consumers.

“Windows has been the birthplace of a variety of technologies, and we believe this will hold for mixed reality too. Given the efforts we have underway on Windows for mixed reality, and our belief that console VR should be wireless, right now we are focused on developing mixed reality experiences for the PC, not on the console.”

I read that as Xbox One, as I didn't see the "VR"

I was hoping to see some of it.
Oh well, next year for VR and will get my DEV kit to complement my HoloLens this august :)
Will be busy enough with it and the Scorpio for this year :)

Wireless?

*imagines a clunky giantic VR headset with a heavy battery on it*

Thats gonna be heavy to wear.. or have a short batterylife....

Microsoft is giveing Sony too long as the sole VR headset for consoles.

Another year, and by the time Xbox has VR it ll be more than 2million+ units behinde.

I don't care about vr.

Which highlights how slowly VR is selling. Microsoft isn't missing a boat because the ship has trouble to leave the harbor.

This. Microsoft honestly should just piggy back on Vive or something. Don't take a risk on something that isn't panning out. Kind of like the Greenbay Packers, they aren't worth your time.

I want it wireless, that is the most annoying thing with VR. That cable can be such a problem especially when you have to stand and turn around and stuff like that.

Does anyone know how much power something like PSVR consumes to have an idea if they could manage to make it wireless? I mean, most of the work is done by the console and the screen doesn't have to be that bright, it's super dark in the headset after all. But I have really no idea how much power it still needs and how low MS could get the power consumption in 2018.

I also don't see it as problem that PSVR will have an advantage of some million units. That's still so low that developers won't be like "sales are so awesome, we don't need more devices for our game"

If it will be done right and better as what we have it can still succeed. If it will be just a second PSVR without any improvements then they should release it earlier.

This is really disappointing. If there was one way Microsoft was going to get me to buy a Scorpio it was with either full support of Oculus or the Vive, or something of their own. I can't think of anyway I'm going to be getting a Scorpio now unless it has KOTOR or something exclusive that doesn't play on the original One.

MS isn't really making their own VR or mix reality device outside of Hololens.  They already have agreements in place for OR and other OEMs like Intel, Dell, Acer for the mix reality devices.  MS sees themselves as the platform for VR/ Mix reality and view it as a bigger eco system then just games.

I'm cool with that, I was just hoping that Scorpio would support those devices day one. But their announcement made it pretty clear they were focusing their VR/AR efforts on PC.
