i don't think that's the arguement. I think most are saying for this holiday, if we presume Pokémon would be a holiday Switch title, would be overkill. If people think ARMS would be affected by Splatoon 2 the month after its release, it's possible that Pokémon could also do the same with Mario Odyssey, even if it's an evergreen title. Plus, you have to consider that shortages of the Switch continuing due to the shortages of manufacturing digital parts and having to fight Apple for assembly lines, according to WSJ. So they may not be able to take advantage of getting sales boost with both Mario and Pokémon releasing in the holidays on the same console. |
Having a port of UM and US on Switch wouldn't have killed Oddyseyy. In fact, having to big games would have helped each other to sell even better.

Sure, why not? 2018 could have Smash Bros, Fire Emblem, Animal Crossing, Kirby, Luigi's Mansion, Mario Party, 2D Mario/Mario Maker, whatever Retro Studio's is developing, etc. These games along with a price cut and/or revision could give Switch another strong year in 2018 without Pokemon.

Many of those have come on past Nintendo consoles and not always worked.
Having Pokemon early is not going to hurt but guarantee better sales. Not having early is a toss in the air.
After the Wii U and being a conservative company, I know I want to be sure my console sells well early than wait to release big guns after the hype deflats.
