Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Xbox One users largely ignore backward-compatible Xbox 360 games

konkari said:

The backward compatibility is only important when the console launches and has small native library. MS was much too late with this feature.

Tell that to the people still actively playing 360 games. A lot of games on 360 still have active online populations.

The 360 and PS3 are unique, they have stayed relevant longer than previous gen consoles and still have active online communities even though we are about 4 years into a new gen.

Sounds about right. Your average gamer doesn't buy shinny new hardware to play dusty old games.

The average gamer... probably isn't using BC much. But millions are.

Think of it this way, a major AAA releases can be worthwhile even if a small percentage of the userbase is actually using it. Its still a great content for those using it.

BC was never hyped as a game changer, its just a fantastic feature that adds value.

Exactly it's in no way a game changer.  In fact ps4 this year in xboxs biggest territory is outselling it but whopping 2:1 so that just shows the average consumer isn't too bothered.

Sony will likely have ps4 BC on the ps5 out the gate nullifying any advantage the next xbox could have.

You're going on a tangent. I'm just pointing out millions are using 360 BC and that should justify its existence.

Anecdotally its not uncommon to see people on my friends list utilzing BC. Especially when notable content hits GWG.

Sony is full of shit if they said that. If it wasn't significant then they wouldn't offer it on so many platforms.

I call bullshit on the graph and MS did as well.

How do you think they got the statistics? Obviously from offering it first and then monitoring purchases and usage.

But they keep doing it over multiple generations. Common sense suggest it really is worthwhile and they hype PS2 releases on PS4.

However, Sony spent a fortune creating PS Now and it looks like a failure. I doubt MS spent a fortune creating 360 BC, certainly not the hundreds of millions invested in PS Now.

And yet PS2 BC on PS4 is pretty much an afterthought...

And PS Now isn't BC. Its a streaming service.

And whoever said MS spent a fortune working on a 360 emulator for the X1?

PS2 BC wouldn't exist if it wasn't worthwhile. Its an opportunity to sell old shit with little work. Sony is downplaying BC because MS has done something great, but Sony looks stupid because they have been doing it for generations and continue to do so. They even built a streaming service so PS4 owners could play PS3 games.

PS Now is their answer BC, https://support.us.playstation.com/articles/en_US/KC_Article/PS4-Backward-Compatibility/?

You misunderstood, the 360 emulator is probably handled by a small team and millions likely use it. While Sony might be bitter they spent a fortune on PS Now and its a failure.

Well I use it. Making my way through Dead Space, Condemned, Burnout Paradise, Halo Reach (online) and RDR.

The only XO game I'm going through is Halo Wars 2 and FH3.

It looks like things aren't changing for a couple of months so BC is a lifesaver for me.

So your happy with rebuying all your own games and Remasters? Okay. PC have been doing BC for years. I spent $2000 my on gaming rig and i still love playing my old games on my shiny new hardware. Its a thing called value. The X1 is 2 consoles in one. Thats what BC does. It offers the customers more value. Its not meant to sell more X1s. Its a good deed for those who already own one.

I wish the PS4 had BC. There's a couple of games I'd like to play again, but I'm too lazy to hook up my PS3. Also on the consoles that offered it, I've played plenty of older games in-between newer onces. In fact; I've probably spent more hours playing DS games on my 3DS than I ever did on my actual DS! BC is a good thing.

I know I'm in the minority but, looking at my sig, 3/5 of the last games I played on my Xbox One were Xbox 360 games.
