Forums - Movies & TV - Wonder Woman is the movie DC fans need and deserve!

So, Thursday my girlfriend and I decided to go to see Wonder Woman as we are both pretty big DC Universe fans. I'm more a Batman fan, and my girlfriend Superman (well really Smallville, CWverse) fan, but seeing the previews we were kind of excited. The only thing in the way of being really excited was seeing BvS and Suicide Squad (we are actually both fans of Man Of Steel despite its flaws).

Now don't get me wrong, I found BvS and Suicide Squad both to have numerous moments I found myself enjoying quite a bit. The actual voice modulator in BvS as well as Jeremy Irons as Alfred, to the mixed martial arts freeform, and hell, the batmobile decimating the town was all fun. As far as Suicide Squad Margot Robbie being hot, as well as her charisma and let's face it one of the best Will Smith performances in a long time. A kick ass soundtrack that really put 21 Pilots in the mainstream all great things.

Unfortunately BvS had one of the absolute worst performances in the incoherrent motivations of iconic villain Lex Luthor. The actual fighting of Batman and Superman last all of 10 minutes, had 0 build up and a payoff most people loathed. The shoehorning of Doomsday and Death of Superman arch that really felt disjointed from the rest of the film are also what keeps that film from really elevating itself. Suicide Squad also has glaring faults such as weak establishments of why the Suicide Squad were bad people, and had the pacing and narative structure of a Rob Zombie movie (shudders). Not to mention heavy advertisement of the Joker only to have Jared Leto pretty much cut out of the film. And if you pay attention to the film you can see how they pretty much chopped and screwed what they did keep to make sure 5 to 10 songs could fit between each scene. Not to mention a trator as the main villain for the very first film.... It holds no weight if we only just met the characters (and the hip dance magic looked ridiculous). To put it simply, they were both fine, but very appearently not up to par with their animated/tv counterparts.

Wonder Woman though, holy cow I was honestly surprised how good it was. From a storyline point of view, you could say it doesn't really break any ground, and you'd be right though it does carry weight and a good message for all superhero movies is there to be had. On a level of execution though, they knocked it out of the park! I won't get into any spoilers as the movie just came out, but Chris Pine and Gal Gadot play really well off each other. Better than Margot and Will and I thought they had some pretty amazing on screen chemistry. The action scenes, holy cow, dead serious some of the best you will see to date, and there is PLENTY of action. The script is very well written without a single eye rolling, embarresing line of dialogue I can remember (looking at you Lex from BvS). The scenes are usually fairly well lit, and there's even some color.... like really, holy shit! It's feminist, and yet everyone in the movie is useful aka men are not bumbling idiots (looking at you Ghostbusters). It is basically equally respectful to both sexes. It also put to bed my fears of Paradise Island looking cheesy (it's hard to pull of a Greek inspired city that looks good), but they done it in Wonder Woman. I basically can give it the highest praise I can give any Superhero movie ever, I left wanting to know more, and look forward to seeing more.

If you have any reservations of seeing this movie at all, put them aside and see this film. You may just get excited about the future of the DCEU!

I'm hoping to see it today. But I'm still not excited about the DCEU. The Justice League movie looks atrocious and that's kind of the glue holding the whole enterprise together.

I feel terribly for Snyder for the personal tragedy in his life, but on a professional level he's just the wrong architect for this cinematic universe.

Standalone movies like Wonder Woman and Batgirl may end up being good, but the overall strategy for the DCEU needs a big shake-up, and fast.

I can definitely understand where you are coming from, but hopefully there's an "aha" moment with this successful film that Warner/DC will take something away from.

I hope so too. I love DC more than Marvel, so I hope Warner Bros. can pull it together. Disney is eating their lunch right now.

Why not take a page from the DCAU? Bruce Timm and company managed to make some awesome TV episodes and movies in the DC universe by honoring the source material, casting well, and developing their characters.

I'd love to see that happen! The DCAU is definitely THE place to go for DC. The fact season 3 of Young Justice is coming brings me no end of joy. As far as the live action movies even the Nolan Batmans had the issue of having too big of a cast to really flesh them all out (not to mention a theme that is pretty much thrown out the window with the whole I don't kill but the only way the major threats of the films get resolved is when he arms other people to kill his villains for him, and a really weak third act following Batman Begins, and The Dark Knight).

From a story POV, I enjoyed BvS Extended Version more than I did Wonder Woman.

I thought WW was absolutely fantastic. This is the movie that should've kicked off DC's movie universe. Maybe then MoS (which I liked despite my criticism) might have actually had a hopeful Superman instead of a downtrodden angsty teenager in a 33 year old Kryptonian's body.

I watched the trailer for Spiderman, and I cant help think.... ANOTHER F***ing reboot of spiderman.

So Im glad they re doing differnt super hero movies.
Dr Strange, Guardians of the Galaxy, Wonder Woman, Deadpool ect.

If your going to do another superhero movie (of which we ve gotten so damn many of lately) please do a good one. I hope the new spiderman movie is a failour, and they stop with the constant reboots of it.

MoS was so damn bad.... Too many liberties taken by the movie producers/story writers.

Its a big slap in the face to those that enjoy the comics.

Even those that dont (like myself, I dont read superman comics) still mostly all agree that the movie was just crap.

Much better than I was expecting, and just a really solid movie in general.  Gal Gadot is the first actor in the DCEU (excluding suicide squad since I haven't seen that) that really embodied their characters.  They kept away from introducing a lot of other characters to set up future movies, and focussed on giving Wonder Woman an engaging character arc.  The World War I setting was perfect for the movie, and I love how it actually felt like a war compared to the sort of gee willickers version of war from The First Avenger.

The main complaint I would have is the pacing.  The movie gets really good when Diana actually gets into the war, but prior to that it's a bit meh.  Not bad, but they spend a little too much time at her home island and in London, and the fish out of water comedy begins to wear thins. They're still introducing characters about an hour into the movie, which was in general a bit too long.   The villains are also kind of weak.  It makes sense that we didn't really get to know the main villain all that much, but the secondary foes have limited motivation beyond "they're really mean".

The most important thing though is that Wonder Woman has something that no other DC movies have had.  Likeabe characters.  Superman and Batman are unbearably moody and gloomy.  Wonder Woman and her supporting cast actually display an array of emotions and even smile once in a while.  Imagine that.  It's not as quippy or funny as Marvel's stuff, but that's fine.  It doesn't have to be as humorous, it just can't be so aggressively glum.  There needs to be a reason we actually want to see that world saved.

To do the inevitable comparison to Marvel movies, it would be about middle of the pack.  I certainly liked it better than the weaker entries (Thor, Iron Man sequels, Captain America), but I don't think it was as good as the better entries.  To compare it with Guardians 2 (just cause that's still fresh in my mind), I was more engaged during Wonder Woman's biggest moments, but I was also bored during some stretches.  Guardians of the Galaxies highs weren't as high, but I was interested throughout the whole thing.

It's ok.  Some people enjoy having someone shit in their mouth more than a delicious bowl of ice cream.  There's room for all kinds on this crazy blue marble.
