Let's not pretend CO2 is not a cause of global warming. Methane certainly is but it isn't the only one.

While I am all against our planet becoming vegan, I certainly think we should cut back on beef. Beef production takes almost as much land as crops that feed people - that land could be used for reforestation, crops, and a whole number of things. I encourage those who want their protein fix to have fish or chicken; both are much less of a drain on the planet, still very tasty, and of course offers lots of protein...

...I really could use some KFC right now.

Made a bet with LipeJJ and HylianYoshi that the XB1 will reach 30 million before Wii U reaches 15 million. Loser has to get avatar picked by winner for 6 months (or if I lose, either 6 months avatar control for both Lipe and Hylian, or my patrick avatar comes back forever).

I recall making a paper studying this in high school

The amount of damage a cow brings is just ridiculous. They eat insane amounts of food, destroy environments, release loads of methane (much more dangerous than CO2), and let out a lot of waste.

Ever since I learned about the cow industry, I've drastically reduced my red meat intake. Chicken and seafood is a much healthier (and eco friendly) option.

Less red meat also does wonders for your health

And all mostly thanks to fast food. Just imagine all the cows needed to feed the Americans who eat 50 billion hamburgers a year.

Fish and chicken are my main sources of protein, cut almost all pork and beef in recent years.

Welcome to the enlightened club! I've completely cut processed meat ever since the WHO cancer study and I've brought consumption of red meat to a minimum.

"Earthlings" was was reason I went Vegan. Cowspiracy just reaffirmed that decision. Both are really good docs.

It'd be a very hard transition for me, but I think that with enough effort I could become a vegetarian. Now, a vegan, that's a different story. I don't know if I could live without ice cream!

They make vegan Ice Cream and it's delicious. Hell Ben & Jerry's has vegan line of pints now.

Just like anything else in life, once you get into the routine it becomes second nature. People always ask me if I miss eating meat. It's been 12 years since I've tasted it so it's not something I ever think about.

How do you create policy to combat this? Most environmental policy is about improving the handling of something and improving efficiency. Without putting direct limits on cattle farming, how can improve the handling of, or improve the efficiency of cattle farming in a way which will produce a visible impact?

Cow 'emissions' more damaging to planet than CO2 from cars

http://www.nationalgeographic.com/people-and-culture/food/the-plate/2016/11/seaweed-may-be-the-solution-for-burping-cows/

"About 14.5 percent of anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions come from livestock."

"The crucial research, by Robert Kinley of CSIRO and Rocky De Nys, professor of aquaculture at Australia’s James Cook University, and colleagues, involved testing some 20 different species of seaweed in artificial cow stomachs—that is, a mix of rumen and microbes that mimics the behavior of a cow stomach in a bottle. When grass or feed is added to this in vitro tummy, fermentation takes place and the scientists are able to measure the resulting methane output. In the presence of Asparagopsis taxiformis—described by De Nys as “a real stand-out” among the tested seaweeds— methane production was cut by 99 percent. Experiments in sheep showed that if dried Asparagopsis taxiformis seaweed made up just 2 percent of total feed, methane emissions drop by 70 percent. It can be added as a sprinkle, De Nys says, just as you might add a smattering of herbs to roast chicken."

You can make cows that dont produce methane.

If your "smart" about raiseing cows, and use sea weed amoung the grass you feed them.

Thats the future.

We just need to make sure farmers are doing it this way.

That way you can eat your beef, and still be good to the enviroment.

It's funny seeing all the faux environmentalists who never cared about the environment suddenly be really interested, totally not just because Trump took US out of the Paris Agreement. Whatever Trump does the Clinton fanatics have to be on the other side of it.

All the major environmentalist groups ignored/continue to ignore the impact of eating meat on the climate. It doesn't matter if you save on water showering etc, because the water consumed by and for cattle to become food is significantly higher than humans combined could make up for it.

Who are those? Paris Climate Agreement supporters?

Yeah, that title is pretty silly.  The article says that "18% of the total release of greenhouse gases world-wide" come from livestock.  18% is certainly a contributing factor but it isn't "the true cause".  That implies that all we have to do is kill all the cows and then we can pollute elsewhere all we want.  I really wish people wouldn't over-use hyperbole.

Luckily we'll have stem cell meat in 10-15 years that will fix this problem.

A lot of things increase greenhouse gases. It's funny how the anti intellectuals think that it's impossible to concentrate on multiple things at the same time. The fact that other things cause greenhouse gases does not excuse the US to reduce their CO2 footprint.

But that's Trumps MO. "Don't look at the things I'm doing horribly wrong, just look at the things everyone else does wrong so I can continue to be horribly wrong in everything I do". What a prick. And peoplke actually support this highly egotistical view. What a bunch of pricks.
