Forums - PC Discussion - IDC: PC market vs tablet market 2016, tablet market falls vastly short of PC market.

PC

TABLETS

I decided to make that thread after reading some comments for super popularity of tablets over pc ( desktops/laptops ) ...

Many people still have the notion that tablet market is bigger than pc market!  It was never like this, simply pc market was dropping, approaching the levels of tablet market but  it was still considerably bigger than it.

Since the end of 2014, tablet are in continuous significant decline, what's having only growth are the detachable tablets that are laptops when you attach the keyboards ( which are perfect for tasks ) . As you can see in the charts,  pc and tablets shipments have almost the whopping 100m difference in shipments for 2016.

While pc market started to stabilize* and some vendors seeing significant growth to their shipments ( *in Q4,  open the link in the end of page  to read ) !  Demand for gaming desktops and to a less extend gaming laptops  is very strong.

Reasons for the dwindling of tablet market, might be that people are no longer upgrading easily, tablets not being  anymore a hot thing for gaming , the expontentially increasing popularity of convertible laptops ( laptops with touchscreen and special hinges, that you can fold inversely and get a tablet ),  and the introduction of cheap laptops.

Tablets isn't really a high bar to beat. It's a miracle they still exist.

Yeah so much for the death of PC market lol...

Reading all these articles, I was shocked when I realized  from research that tablet market sizenever had surpassed PC market, their smallest difference ever was  30-40m...

Well, pc market stopped reaching the heights of 310-320mm+ shipment per year ,  it fell to 250-260m+, so some  journalist and analysts hastened to predict the death of the market and some other were overstating with the decline, they forgot where pc market was before 6-8 years...

Does it remind you something?

The reason why tablet market hasn't fallen even more is the existence of  a specific type of devices like Microsoft surface Pro and may rebound in the future because of these!

I think I know which thread you are refering to, but you misunderstood the argument if you combine desktops and laptops. The actual argument was about portable PCs (laptops, tablets, smartphones) vs. stationary PCs (desktops). Additionally, traditional PC shipments include sales to businesses. In the consumer segment, portable PCs comfortably win against desktops.

Has there been another thread in the mean time that was about tablets vs. desktops and laptops?

I knew you would come here...

You said that tablets and laptops are more popular than desktop pcs, Miyamoto said that tablets are more popular than pcs...

So, who do you think is the recipient of that thread?

I don't really know who specifically you are addressing. I have to admit that I skipped reading many of the new posts in the other thread.

It's miyamoto, because he compared talbet and pc market in general, you, did something else! :)

It's really hard to improve upon the PC... touch screens make plenty of sense for handheld devices, but lord do I prefer the layout and accessories (Mouse/keyboard etc) of a PC over tablet functionality.

That's valid for many people,  thus the tablets with detachable keyboards ( which are laptops with the keyboard attached ) , have a great growth while the simple ones face a sharp decline in sales.

Most of the doom comes from the erosion of low end pre-built PCs but also conveniently ignoring all the other data that shows growth in general hardware shipments and growth in the high end market.

I think tablets are a bit stuck, they do not have the portabiltiy of a phone nor the multi-tasking capacity of a PC (except for the Surface ones). Personally, my Android tablet is mostly a glorified Youtube player when I don't want to be at my PC.

You put it very well!

Look that chart, yeah pc market is back to 2006-2008  levels and has now stabilized, so it's dying... HAHAAH It's not allowed to decline and return to levels before the start of the consecutive growth...

For god's sake, some journalists and anal-ysts infuriate me!
