Does anyone have to beat Nintendo?  Sony is doing well enough to make a nice profit, even while their business model is geared more towards the Western audience.  It's a strategy that's worked quite well for them.  As long as PS4 sales don't slump completely, I think they'd be fine with this.

If the Switch outsells PS4 in the West though, we can probably expect the PS5 to be a hybrid.

Why would the ps5 be a hybrid if switch sells well. No matter what ps4 will sell over 100m+ and will be Sony's most profitable console by far.

Why would they risk all that with a hybrid which wouldn't be that powerful and would be competing with other handhelds. Instead they'll obviously make the ps5 a direct sequel to the ps4.

They don't need too. They already have strong presence in the rest of the world. Japan and US is pretty much the only strong market for Nintendo.

Its not only about Pokemon and Monster Hunter, you are free to mention games like Animal Crossing, Mario Kart, 2D/3D Mario, Smash Bros and now Splatoon. All those games will easily outsell any Sony exclusive.
