Forums - Politics Discussion - Veteran soldiers suicides why is this big issue still not solved?

Even verbal appreciation without specific politics can help some people.

War is not a natural state of being, going around killing people is not natural, having people around you killed is not natural.

Of course people who are in war zones are going to come out of it fucked up. That's just how it goes. There's no magic pill that fixes the mental trauma that comes from war, there's nothing to "solve".

because the government does not care

+1 That is how the Capitalist system in America works, the government does not care at all for its citizens. Veteran soldiers experience high rates of suicide, high rates of mental health issues and high rates of homelessness due to not being able to readjust to civilian life. European countries take care of its veteran soldiers with good health care, generous military pensions  and programs to help soldiers readjust to civilian life. American citizens have been brainwashed by media, government and corporations that embracing European socialist policies is bad.

The solution is well known - stop sending human beings to war. Especially wars of aggression, that serve no purpose except to fuel the military industrial complex. Stop having humans destroy places and kill people.

Because there's still wars going on.

People still aren't reading the article, amazingly enough.

Warfare and combat do not seem to be the definite reasons for high suicide rates, as many of those in the study "spent little or no time fighting in the most recent wars." Most were also over age 50, so it's not like they're over-sensitive young people. Suicide is as common for those who served in an office as for those who served in the field.

A lot of people just seem to be using this so they can push their own political agenda without even taking the time to learn anything about the issue. That's lame.

Personally, I'm not so sure there is much that can be done, as I'm not really sure that the rate of military suicides is outside of the norm when compared to the average rate for males only. Using the combined male/female numbers for civilians makes the gap seem a lot wider. This needs to be adjusted to better reflect the actual percentages. Moreover, white males are the largest group in military service, which is also the most at-risk group for suicides among civilians--especially those over 50 years of age, which is where we see most military suicides.

Actually when you read the article, it is not about war veterans, it is mostly about older military personnel (above 50), most of whom never served in conflicts.

My reasoning for this case is that military people retire younger than most other professions, and suddenly they face a situation where there are no routines, no community to belong to, it is probably a hard situation to adapt and find a new purpose for life.

Not taking any position on the need of military, just trying to understand why this situation prevails.

Because Trump doesn't care.

Trump cares a lot about veterans. This is why the vast majority voted for him.

They don't seem very satisfied.

If you demand respect or gratitude for your volunteer work, you're doing volunteering wrong.

How is this a problem? This is what they want. The less vets to survive means less witnesses to war crimes in other countries. They are expendable.

Gramps was in ww2 and then worked the fields 14 hours a day 7 days a week till he was in his mid 70s and lives till 80 something.

That is horrible. On behalf of human race I can say that I would rather off myself than live like that.
