Risky move focussing so much on the motion controls, but good to see them still targeting young adults.

Around the Network

Well, they announced the game to show off the Switch's motion controls, so it's unsurprising that they're focusing so much on them.

It helps that the previews of the game show great promise and most, if not all, who tried it in the previews praised the motion controls. Plus, the controls are being well received in the Testpunches.

I wasn't able to find a Switch today, so I can't try it out

Nice! About time. If the game fails, we can't say they didn't push it enough. Btw, I think the worst case scenario is 500k first month and 1.5m LT and the best case is 1.5m first month and 6m LT. I think it will land somewhere in the middle (750k FM and 4m LT).

Bet with Teeqoz for 2 weeks of avatar and sig control that Super Mario Odyssey would ship more than 7m on its first 2 months. The game shipped 9.07m, so I won

I think it'll do 1.5 million lifetime in North America alone.

1 million in Europe, 500k in Japan.

So a little over 3 million.

It's not so much about the controls, it's about the presentation. N64 was using carts when CDs were the new hotness and had a 3 pronged controller that looked like it was designed for an alien species yet the system was a sales beast for years. And a lot of that was on the marketing.

And this isn't the first advert. It showed up in the Super Bowl ad for one. It has also been promoted in an ad with Splatoon since launch, which is interesting sorta marrying the two together as a pair of summer games.

Thankfully the game has multiple controller configurations.

Yep! One of the best things about the Switch!

Pocky Lover Boy!

"Lapsed gamers" were a target audience for the Wii, and part of why it succeeded. The Switch is probably hoping to do the same--in this case, people who loved Wii Sports but ignored the Wii U. They don't have the stigma against motion controls that the Internet crowd does so Nintendo shouldn't be afraid to show them. And this is the best game to show that appeal.
