Forums - Sales Discussion - Switch vs Ps4 - Who will win 2017 WW

Well I guess now's a good as time for crow as any with the Switch finishing with roughly 12.5-13.5m and the PS4 with 20-21m, so here it all is in one convenient post.

Tryklon - "PS4 has absolutely no chance whatsoever of winning 2017 in sales."

Abronn627 - "Switch. PS4 will be in it's 4th holiday this year and software release won't matter much at this point."

Slade6Alpha - "If Switch was fully stocked, no contest Switch. PS4 gets the handout victory. " (selling over 20m is a handout!)

Slarvax - "I think it's gonna be closer than most are saying, but PS4 should win. I give them a 5 million difference at most. " (Switch will finish with around 12.5-13.5m, PS4 will finish with around 20-21m. A difference of 6.5-8.5m)

VideoGameAccountant - "Nintendo potentially selling 15-17 million this year (based on sales of the Wii and DS) and Sony not making their 18 million goal, I'd go with Switch. " (Wrong on both counts VideoGameAccountant)

Rolstoppable - "the sell-through numbers will likely fall into the ranges of 15-18m for the PS4 and 10-14m for Switch." (Not much to say, the predicted ranges are incredibly wide, PS4 sales still outperformed his expectations.)

AnmolRed - "Switch , especially if they announce Pokemon. " (I guess they did announce pokemon)

HyrulianScrolls - "Gonna say Switch does because I see the demand for it being massive this holiday"

Jumpin - "Switch, it's hot, the PS4 has peaked and is winding down. " (The peak year before was 17.6m, this year it's going to be 20-21m definitely not winding down.)

Slab_of_bacon - "It's a launch year for the Switch with some great titles. It will be close but it's hard for me to imagine the Playstation 4 keeping up with that"

Kristof81 - "I'm guessing Switch, but it's going to be close..."

VideoGameAccountant - "why should we think that Sony won't decline. The PS4 is in its fourth year, so we should expect some decline. Nintendo is real competition. With this in mind, why should we expect that Sony can keep its earlier sales volume up?" (Second post by him, he doesn't really live up to his name. PS4 sales will have increased roughly 16.5%, not close to decline.)

irstupid - "There is the new hot item, the Switch. Then there is the new Scorpio, Both should steal a console or two from the PS4 this holiday season. So expecting same sales from PS4 this year as last year is being dillusional." (Sales went up around 16.5% if Flat was delusional I don't know what you'd have said about that.)

AnthonyW86 - "I think Switch"

The post-traumatic Wii U-stress disorder (Wii U-PTSD) is clearly visible in this thread (among many others this year). But the unfortunate thing is that the patients are just making the symptoms worse when they make unrealistic predictions. Hopefully by the next year they have learned that seeking short-term satisfaction is not going to pay in the long run.

I think PS4 will outsell Switch also in 2018 (around 18m PS4, 15m Switch). Even if the new Pokemon-game turns out to be a huge hit, it won't be enough because it will be released not until the end of the year. Switch sales could drop during the first half of next year, but receive a big boost once the Pokemon releases.

Safe to say ps4 easily win this year, hell the last 6 months outsold the switch full launch year so far. And they'll easily win next year outside Japan

I dont kno. Looking at it we can see the most epic battle for Hardware of all time in a single year (competitors so exclude wii/ds). Ps4 can be up YoY and sell 22mil+ fornexample and switch might do 20mil+

Switch sales in Japan are at 3.3 million as for 24 December 2017, and account for 25% of WW sales, which mean Switch is at ~13.2 million worldwide.

With another week, is pretty fair to assume that 13.5 million will be the minimum of Switch sales in 2017, not the maximum. I actually think 13.6/13.7 million will be the final number, with worldwide shipments at around 14.5 million.

The switch is absolutely still supply constrained in Japan lol. Like seriously supply constrained. There were about 2 days after Christmas where it wasn’t but it’s already back to being constrained.

elsewhere it is not of course, though according to an insider on ERA (who has been there for years and is usually correct), switch had some minor stock issues in the US during the Christmas week.

either way ps4 smashed it this year. But I don’t think it’s because switch underperformed (it’s quite the opposite), but because PS4 massively outperformed most peoples expectations. I expected 17 million but here we are with 20 million looking most probable.

next year could be even better for PS4 but i expect a slight decline tbh, about 18 million. For switch, I predict 17 million :p

Not anymore it seems ...

New units can be had from sellers at ~33000 yen which is pretty close to the reference price of 32378 yen ...

none of them will come back and eat crow, but it's nice to see anyway

I served my own crow earlier.

Bet with bluedawgs: I say Switch will outsell PS4 in 2018, he says PS4 will outsell Switch. He's now permabanned, but the bet will remain in my sig.

Unfortunately you, along with rol, are the least deserving of crow on the list. Now irstupid deserves a big healthy portion!

I would be surprised if Switch wins. The Wii sold 17 million 1st year which is what PS4 does right now. The Switch is selling 10% more now but I do not think that will be the case forever.

So I say PS4 2017
Switch will beat the PS4 every year after 2017

I believe this because I expect the PS5 to release next holiday of 2018. I know people will call me crazy but I am not! (Unless I am wrong then I am crazy)

Well I am definitely wrong about the PS5 launch. I am right about who won 2017 in terms of sales. So I will stick to my guns and say Switch will win 2018,2019 and 2020.

I knew the Switch wouldn't win with this being the launch year and only having 10 months. I expect the Switch to accelerate quickly next year just like the Wii and DS. Sales should be above 20 million next year or close to it.

Switch is 9th generation. Everyone else is playing on last gen systems! UPDATE: This is no longer true

If Nintendo could keep with the production it will be no contest for Switch but I don't think they can produce that many.

This is funny because on one of  the biggest sales week of the year BF there were bundles of switches lying around as the ps4 slim flew off the shelves.

Anyway 2017 turned out to be an easy victory for ps4.

There were Switch bundles during BF? I don't recall that.
