The Wii U had a bad marketing scheme and terrible third party support. Seeing that Nintendo made a handheld hybrid, this is going to make the console a more attactive upgrade option from their large DS fanbase (especially if a Pokemon is announced). If that happens the floodgates will open.

When Nintendo makes a console with low end specs, they know support is going to be bad. The Switch has been no exception with modest support but its a cool portable console and now has no competitor in that arena.
Marketing wasn't the issue for Wii U. I genuinely believe people hated the Wii U tablet and it made the console too expensive. Regardless of how good Nintendo games are, people will evidently ignore them if they have a lame/expensive console.
