In Japan they probably cut some of the legs off of it by launching late, but in the West I think the Switch version of XX will outsell the 3DS version so it's worth porting on that basis alone. In any case really this is more about prepping the Switch audience for the future Monster Hunter 5. |
Has XX been announced for the 3DS in North America yet? If this gets localized, I agree that a Switch version will outsell a 3DS version. I wouldn't be surprised if they drop the 3DS version, though.

It was released in Japan on 3DS, but this is 1st MH game in HD resolution on portable device, also fact that you can play home at TV is also nice addition, same like tabletop mode, regardles 3DS version people will be hyped about this game. And we already seeing that even smaller Switch games have good sales in Japan, so there is no reason to think that 1st MH game for Switch will sell bad. |
It ultimately depends on how we're defining a good number of sales. Monster Hunter 4 on the 3DS has an attach rate of about 15% in Japan. Even with an optimistic estimate of 2 million Switch units sold, a 15% attach rate for Monster Hunter XX would put it (for the current time) at 300000 units sold. I think that the continued sales will be hindered by competition from the 3DS release and the potential release of Monster Hunter 5. The fact that this is the third release of a non mainline Monster Hunster series game is significant.
