Forums - Gaming Discussion - How FPS franchises are trending in sales

One little request: Can you set the X-Axis to be year or release instead of franchise entry?
That would allow for direct comparison between entries on your graph.

As is, we can't really straight-up compare the fifth entry of CoD to the fifth entry of, say, Halo, now, can we?

Whoever at Activision decided they should go futuristic with COD should be fired. The entire reason CoD 4 MW blew up in the 1st place is because it felt so grounded. People lose connection when things are not based in reality. This is great for some genres (RPG), but for FPS people need to feel grounded.

End of 2009 Predictions (Set, January 1st 2009)

Wii- 72 million   3rd Year Peak, better slate of releases

360- 37 million   Should trend down slightly after 3rd year peak

PS3- 29 million  Sales should pick up next year, 3rd year peak and price cut

Shooters are still going strong in spite of decline. Without digital numbers though we aren't getting the full picture.

Halo 5 for example has strong digital sales.

Even if we add 10% to 20% in digital sales, Halo 5 will be far from Halo 3 numbers though...

I didn't realize the Infinite Warfare drop was so severe, and yet it comfortably sold +10m units.

You know it deserves the GOTY.

Does this include digital?

I don't know if we can say "FPS games are not doing so well" with only a small sampling of titles. What about Overwatch or Doom? I think it would be more accurate to say particular franchises aren't doing as well. It's become a more crowded market-place.

"with only a small sampling of titles"

Come on, I picked up the main 6 highest selling franchises of the last decade. Overwatch only has 1 title so we cannot call it a franchise yet. Same goes for Doom which saw a reboot in 2016 but did not release any new titles since 2005.

You are indeed comparing franchises here, but your conclusion pertains to the entire genre. While some franchises are in decline, some are stable (CS has been pretty stable from entry to entry, showing modest growth), and new FPS's are doing well, like Overwatch, Doom and Destiny.

Oh, should be higher than 20% based on the info we were given.

Eitherway, its not the full picture without digital sales. Just pointing that out.

Agreed that without digital numbers we cannot have a perfect analysis. That said, I'm pretty sure Halo 4 did had a fair number of digital sales too and it currently has double the sales of Halo 5, even if it was released during the end of the console lifespan.

The point here is not to have a perfect picture but just to look at the general trend for the FPS genre based on the main franchises.

I love how fans of a certain company dismiss digital sales

Where is Far Cry Primal?
Also, CoD will be back in quite a rise with WWII this year.
Digital also plays a major tool nowdays as well.

Overwatch and Paladins have been doing great as well, new games are doing very well.

As I said, Primal is not part of the main series.

I'm sure next CoD will do more than Infinite Warfare but won't be near the BO-MW3-BOII-Ghost era.

While I agree digital sales would boost sales of the titles released nowadays (and during the past 2-3 years also), I'm sure it still not count for more than 25%, so even if we consider them, franchises like CoD and Halo would still be in decline.

It would be interesting to look at sales of Far Cry 5 and the next Battlefield game however.
