VAMatt said: The resellability of physical games is an important consideration as well. I used to resell about 80% of the games I bought. Nowadays, I resell probably about half. When I resold a lot, and stayed a year or more behind the release schedule, I was able to play video games for a net cost of about $100 per year. That was always my goal, and I usually hit it. I'm thinking my gaming hobby costs me more like $300 per year now, plus a few hundred of hardware once every few years. |
I wouldn't be able to survive on that budget, I just dropped CAD 112 (incl tax) for a Farpoint bundle. Part of that is HW though :)
I've been getting better though, 3 years ago I spend over CAD 1000 (net after trade ins) on games that year, that was when the exchange rate was on par with the US. Last year was about half and would have been less if it wasn't for all the digital psvr games I bought. Partly because of all the cheap games available now we're 3 years into the current gen and partly because I realized I bought far more than I could play. Paying CAD 80 nowadays for a game I'm not immediately going to play is stupid nowadays. Games depreciate in value faster than anything else, unless it's made by Nintendo.
Actually I could probably survive for another 3 years without buying any more games. Shameful backlog. And then there's the ps+ backlog, add to library for later... Sony might call the second half of a gen the harvest period, for me it's the other way around. Spending less and less on games until the next gen starts again.
Btw why do Nintendo games hold their value better? Is it because Nintendo doesn't do big sales or doesn't print tons of copies for stores to discount to get through stock. Or just because people are willing to pay higher prices for Nintendo games?
Twilight princess for the Wii is still CAD 50 new here. TLG is already down to CAD 40 new.
Super smash bros Wii U is still CAD 60 new. Uncharted 4 already down to CAD 45 new.
