Whenever anyone complains about modern game prices, I always remember wanting Mario 3 & TMNT 2 on NES, but my parents refused to drop $50 on a single game.

For me, physical AAA = $60 or less, 'AA' = $40 or less, 'indie' = $20 or less.
Digital = $15 or less, regardless of budget.

That's cheap. I remember when the N64 came out some cartridges were NLG 230, or $120 at that time! Although that was import, NLG 120 to 160 'normal' price. ($62 to $83) That was when the exchange rate was favorable.

Oh yeah, one big reason N64 was my secondary console that gen. PS1 games were ridiculously cheap in comparison, usually $20-40.

It depends on the context. Street Fighter II being $40 on the Switch is too much in my opinion because you can get pretty much the same game for less than half the price elsewhere. Not to mention that Street Fighter V costs just as much on Steam. I simply can't justify paying that much for what is essentially an updated version of a 26 year-old game.

I dont have a way to answer the OP, but I do know this is absolutely wrong and not healthy for industry and gamer alike. Terms like AAA or AA ext are not for you. These terms relate to expected budget that the game will amass. It in no cements the final quality/content of a game; a AAA can be a complete disaster in terms of quality/content while that indie game can end up being something that you wouldn't had minded spending more on if you had known the quality of the game.

Judging by its cover vs the lasting impression.

"Not for me?" How's the weather up there on your pedestal? FYI I assigned that arbitrary name and value based on what we've been given - ie, Ratchet & Clank didn't cost as much as Uncharted, and was priced at $40 msrp, sounds like the same will happen with Crash Trilogy. I don't intentionally wait for sales on physical, these are just the prices we usually get for new games. (Other than 'indie,' haven't bought any of those physical yet, but keep eyeing Shovel Knight at Best Buy for $20. No time for it just yet.)

Us Canadians pay $80 for games, so it is different for us. I rarely buy at launch anymore, as I've just been burned too many times (AC: Unity for example).

You don't by any chance have any knowledge of historical sticker prices in Canada, do you? The reason I've only ever made a price chart for the U.S. is because of the lack of information on pricing outside the U.S. There's plenty of scans of old Sears and EB catalogs to find U.S. pricing information, but nothing similar for elsewhere.

The N64 was my primary, but mainly because it had the majority of the games that interested me at the time. The N64 and PS1 were the first big purchases I made after getting my first job back in 1998, but ultimately I ended up buying maybe four or five PS1 games vs. at least a dozen N64 games (I would have bought more for both systems, but lack of funds forced me to rent a lot of games). And honestly, I probably would have never bought a PS1 had FFVII not been exclusive to it.

I wasn't really into gaming until around 2012, but games were $60 CAD back then. They started going up as our dollar dropped.

Made a bet with LipeJJ and HylianYoshi that the XB1 will reach 30 million before Wii U reaches 15 million. Loser has to get avatar picked by winner for 6 months (or if I lose, either 6 months avatar control for both Lipe and Hylian, or my patrick avatar comes back forever).

Is that Canadian dollars though? Because google is telling me $80CAD = $59.65USD. So you've actually got it a few cents cheaper than the yanks

But $80 is $80 for Canadians. We don't make more CAD just because it is worth less (in contrary, we make less than Americans because of this).

You never played games as a kid? I was playing video games since at least the age of four or five, having started off on the Intellivision and old arcade games from the early to mid 80s.

I wouldn't remember. My parents bought me games back then, and I honestly didn't care about the price-tag. I was wrong when I said I wasn't into gaming till 2012 (I was on a hiatus after 2007-08 for a few years though), but I only started buying my own games around that time.

Well... you should! That's how most countries economies work

Tell your employer's to stop blowing all their money on maple syrup and ice hockey and pay more wages instead maybe?

Lol. I'm paid just fine, but $80/game adds up. I would rather wait a few months for a sale then buy every new game out there (I sometimes do, but only for games I'm really excited for).

The way i do
I only buy games that i know will retain their value

Example:
Conker Bad Fur Day $50 dollars back then
Today $150 Dollars

It is all about investment

Games like Uncharted 4 for example,,, i know that the $60 launch price will be only $15 $20 in a year.
So what i do i wainting.

The good thing about Nintendo games is that 90 % of their games trend to go up in price after a few years. With sales of BOTW on wii u stoping at 1 million,, that version i 5 years will reach $100 dlls

With Best Buy and Amazon programs, nobody in the US should pay more then $48 plus sales tax for a new physical console game, unless it is a collectors edition. So, the market has spoken, and that's what they're worth.

Personally, I don't like to buy digital games, because they are almost always more expensive than physical. However, I'm starting to value the convenience of not having to change disks to play different games. Still, I don't buy AAA games digitally unless they're old, and cheap. I'm thinking I may buy Destiny 2 digitally though, as I will likely be playing if off-and-on for years, and I don't want to do all of that disk switching.
