Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Phil Spencer: Scorpio will be the very best console version of games this year..

Power matters now, huh?

The reason why power was emphasized at the beginning of the PS4/XB1 lifecycle was because the PS4 was more powerful in addition to being more affordable (and later, evenly priced when Microsoft unbundled the Kinect in June 2014).

He's kind of right. When Sony times the PS5 launch it should be safe for 4k gaming to drop. Microsoft jumped the gun on 4k gaming big time. They are just doing this to one up Sony. Sony didnt make the PS4 4k capable because they didnt believe the market was ready nor that the hardware was cost effective at this time. People are streaming more, but sony only screwed up by buying gaikai for BC streaming. You're hyping up a console thats only going to be purchased by a minority of people while company its not even headlining for is losing badly. When sony drops more games its kind of over. Xbox gamers did the same thing during the OG Xbox and Microsoft had to cut the gen short because they were decimated.

Erm no and far beyond being right. If you havnt notice 4k has already hit off. The Scorpio would have been planned years ago not as a last minute decision. MS had another console that was due last year which is more like the PS4 Pro which they scrapped due to it being a silly idea going half way with specs. MS is a PC company which houses heaps of 4k content. They know whats going on.

As for thinking this is to only 1 up Sony.. thats the problem with this industry and its fans. ALL companies are trying to 1 up each other, not just MS. These consoles take years of planning and reserach. There not just  (lets quickly rush a system to be more powerful).

MS most likely dont care what Sony do. There aiming for the 4k market something the PS4 Pro failed to do.

MS jumped the gun. Scorpio will be $599 and not get much 3rd party support since it wont sell very well due to its price. Sony is able to offer 4K gaming at $399 and will drop the price of the Pro the moment Scorpio drops. SOny is in the best position right now with the PS4, it extended its lifecycle by releasing the Pro and will release the PS5 in 2019 with much better tech using AMDs new Ryzen architecture and have a fresh start console. The Project scorpio will be able to drop price to compete however Sony will have the technology edge again.

But the scorpio platform still needs to have games made from the bottom up for this kind of technology, in order for the games to look at best, and better than on other platforms. And so what games are coming to scorpio, made from the ground up. Forza 7 perhaps?

Do they really need to be built from the ground up?

You are forgetting that the bulk of Xbox games, even exclusives are already on PC. And they run with significantly improved levels of fidelity.
Scorpio can take those assets and run them.

Or you can wait another year for an XB2 which will most likely be more powerful than the PS5 since its likely to release later. It never ends. Atleast Scorpio is the perfect start for 4k gamers with 4k Screens. And will be cheaper than the PS5 and will be BC which PS5 probably wont be.

Scorpio will be a benefit to 1080P users. Downsampling brings big improvements.

* Sony isn't offering 4k gaming. It's hardware isn't powerful enough to guarentee it.
* The Pro isn't selling like hotcakes either.
* Hopefully Ryzen isn't the CPU of choice for next gen. Hopefully they use something newer than outdated 2017 technology.
* Scorpio and the Pro don't need to compete in price, they are not high-volume hardware. They are Halo products to draw attention to the platform as a whole, the bulk of the sales will continue to be the Xbox One S and Playstation 4 Slim which will continue to be price competitive.

And PS4 has the best versions since 4 years now so whats his point?

His point is that he was asked a question and he answered it. I think he's free and knowldgeable and enough to give Xbox fans insight on the future ain't it?

Did you read the whole link? Translation error most likely, especially in the context of what they were talking about.
Pro beat its sales expectations more than slim's sales expectations is likely what was meant.

http://www.playstationlifestyle.net/2017/01/19/report-ps4-pro-sold-238000-units-us-last-month/
That indicates about 15% of total sales were for the pro, about 10% in Japan.

Ah, well, I did say it "seems". Though it seems I was mistaken instead. Stupid translation errors.

Right, lemme just go ahead and drop my PS+, abandon my hard-earned trophy score, abandon all the games I already own digitally, sell my physical collection, sell my PS4 Pro, pre-order an Xbox Scorpio, and get all my friends to do the same.

Oh wait, no. That's stupid. This generation is too far in for a change to the status quo.

Yea, that's why the Scorpio isn't changing much.  If you look at sales, interest in the XBO at $249 has started to drop, even in the US.  Having a $400-$500 version with prettier graphics isn't going to help much.  Especially since it'll only appeal to people in a handful of regions to begin with.

And while it's not the biggest reason to switch/stay, I think Sony coming up with a better trophy system is going to help.  I mean the gamerscore just seems outdated, like keeping score in Atari games.  It sure wasn't enough to keep people with Xbox, like some thought it might.  Having it work more like leveling up in a RPG just seems more interesting to me.  Again, I don't think it'll be a big reason, but I think it'll part of the reason people stay with PS this and next gen.

I never saw trophies on Playstation as a RPG level up system but now that you mention it... yeah it totally is, damn now i feel the need to get more platinums, im definitely getting the ones from the games im playing this year since they are all awesome games that deserve it.

to the OP well... its kind of expected that it would have the best versions.

Im sure MS is banking hard on people doing just what you described.

Did a great or noticable amount of people walk away from the PS2 to play the original Xbox? Microsoft has tried this before and its never worked. If you want to beat Sony you must beat them from all angles with games and marketing deals.
