The juggernaut that is Grand Theft Auto V has now surpassed 80m sales, according to publisher Take-Two. In the company's Q4 and fiscal year earnings release, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick confirmed that the title has now sold at least another 5m copies since the company's last earnings report in February, taking its total sell-in figure to an impressive 80m since its launch in September 2013.

Indeed, he revealed to MCV that physical sales are still the driving force behind the title's seemingly unstoppable success, standing at 75 per cent compared to 25 per cent digital sales: "What's driving this is that consumers love this title and want more of it," he added.

It's not just Rockstar's titles that are doing well, though, as 2K's Mafia III has now sold-in more than 5m units, while Civilization VI has sold-in nearly 2m units. Zelnick also revealed the Civilization series has a whole has now sold more than 40m units worldwide. 

NBA 2K17 is also set to become Take-Two's highest-selling sports title ever, with a sell-in of nearly 8m to date. Its recurrent consumer spending also continues to grow, rising 71 per cent over the last fiscal year.

So this year GTA V will officially beat Wii Sports in total sales. Such numbers, this is madness.

I am just getting around to playing GTA V on PS4. There are two copies in my house. My brother played through the PS3 version but does GTA online through PS4. Who is buying this?

Yes, and as a non-pack in, that also still being sold at full price. In terms of revenue generated, it wouldn't even be close.

The operative word is dying. Remember this game spans two generations, and the spike in console digital sales didn't really get going until this gen. Would love to see the digital % for just PS4/XBO, which is what really matters. I suspect the numbers are quite a bit larger there.

I have trouble believing it's been at the $30 price point for "a long time". At any Best Buy, Wal-Mart, EB, I've been to, as recently as a week ago, it was selling for full price. I saw it reduced for about a month during last Christmas season, and even then, only at Best Buy. Fair play to you though, it's currently at $39.99 on amazon Canada, and I don't know what American retailers have been up to, but I checked the price often in the past, just for fun, and this is fairly recent change.

I think the jump to the current gen made the graphics more real and the open world was really alive.
