PS4 Pro is not powerful enough to run Destiny 2 at 60fps, says Bungie

Destiny 2 developer, Bungie, has stated that PS4 Pro lacks the power to run its game at 60fps following the recent Destiny 2 gameplay reveal.

Destiny 2 will run at 30fps on the PS4 Pro as Sony’s souped-up gaming console is simply not powerful enough to handle the shooter at a higher frame rate, Bungie has said.

Speaking with IGN, Luke Smith and Mark Noseworthy, project leads for Destiny 2, acknowledged the PS4 Pro’s raw horsepower, although noted that its shared-world shooter has a lot more going on this time around in comparison to its predecessor, which is taxing on the console’s CPU.

I mean, I’m going to wade into this, and you [Mark Noseworthy] can flesh it out,” commented Smith. “The console, the PS4 Pro is super powerful, but it couldn’t run our game at 60. Our game’s this rich physics simulation where collision of players, networking, etc, and like, it wouldn’t run… [there’s] not enough horsepower there.”

It’s on the CPU side,” Noseworthy added. “Destiny’s simulation, like we have more AI, more monsters in an environment with physically simulated vehicles and characters and projectiles, and it’s part of the Destiny magic, like that, like 30 seconds of fun, like coming around a corner and throwing a grenade, popping a guy in the head, and then you add like five, six, seven other players in a public event; that is incredibly intensive for hardware.”

Destiny 2 is due for release on PS4 and Xbox One on September 8, 2017, with a PC version following at a later date. The game takes place following the events of Rise of Iron from the original Destiny, and sees Guardians on the defense after the Tower is brought to its knees by a prolonged attack from a Cabal unit known as The Red Legion. As a result, all your gear and weapons will not be transferable to the sequel, although you can still carry over your Guardian’s gender and customised appearance.

Bungie hosted a worldwide Destiny 2 gameplay reveal last week, where it confirmed a slew of new details on the much-anticipated sequel. Chiefly, the game will feature a more expansive open-world ripe with side quests, as well as revamping the multiplayer to accommodate 4v4 matches. As expected, Guardians now have a host of new Super abilities and there’s a heap of additional exotic and legendary weapons to hunt down.

If that wasn’t enough, Nolan North, who provides the voice of Ghost in the series, confirmed that Bungie already has ideas for the Destiny 3 storyline up its sleeves.

The problem is that the Jaguar CPU cores are starting to become really dated. They're basically slightly souped up in comparison to Intel's Atom line...

Even if the pro was powerful enough they would still have to cap it a 30fps to make it fair on those who play on a base ps4 im sure bungie dont want to give certain player any kind of advantage

They are much better than Atom LOL.

Try running MGS V, Battlefield 1 or COD Infinity Warfare in 60 fps on Atom.

On a Goldmont Atom with a decent CPU at a high enough clockspeed and 8 cores? Yes it's possible. But I'm convinced the Jaguar-based CPU was a mistake. The PS4's CPU is slightly weaker then the Cell CPU of the PS3. The Xbox 360's CPU was a simpler version of the Cell PPE PowerPC chip but still very performant.

I'm telling you, a more modern 8-core PowerPC chip would have definatly performed better then the PS4 and Xbox One.

60 fps is easily achievable but gotta squeeze out every last polygon... Though I suppose that's why some buy a Pro: for the graphics...

Don't think anyone was expecting otherwise.

PC Specs: CPU: 7800X3D || GPU: Strix 4090 || RAM: 32GB DDR5 6000 || Main SSD: WD 2TB SN850

Well duh, framerate is largely CPU limited and the Pro only had a modest CPU bump.

Bet with Adamblaziken:

I bet that on launch the Nintendo Switch will have no built in in-game voice chat. He bets that it will. The winner gets six months of avatar control over the other user.

So, would it be that bad if physics didn't run at 60 Hz even if the game was rendered in 60 FPS? Or does Bungie's engine tie the two together?

It's only CPU limited when your CPU is a potato. Regular gaming PCs with non-vegetable based CPUs are basically never CPU limited.
