Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Could a Zelda JRPG work?

With Nintendo's recent comments about remixing old ideas and focusing on new ones I was wondering: could we see a change up on the RPG side of things.

Intelligent Systems, the Mario and Luigi develops, or even Silicon Studios in a third party teamup deciding to use another Nintendo franchise as a RPG, and with Mario and Pokemon already having done so Zelda is the next logical step.

What would a Zelda RPG with turn based combat, or even a Zelda in the style of Fire Emblem be like anyway? Would it sell you think?

The Democratic Nintendo fan....is that a paradox? I'm fond of one of the more conservative companies in the industry, but I vote Liberally and view myself that way 90% of the time?

I'll admit my understanding of RPG vs JRPG is less region of origin and more: RPG is Kingdom Hearts, JRPG Is Pokemon.

I think that defeats the purpose.... it would not be a zelda game anymore.
It would carry the name, the characters ect... but it wouldnt be zelda.

So it cant be the direction for the future of zelda.

There still needs to be "real" zelda games in the future, the fan base is too big to just ignore.

I rather enjoyed Super Mario RPG.

It wasnt a "mario" game, but a rpg with mario in it.

a spin-off zelda like that, would appeal to me.

Kingdom Hearts is a JRPG.

The JRPG is a turn based battles. Dance Water Dance was not turn based.

A turn based Zelda? You mean Ocarina of Time?

Bet with bluedawgs: I say Switch will outsell PS4 in 2018, he says PS4 will outsell Switch. He's now permabanned, but the bet will remain in my sig.

I wouldn't be against it, though the direction it is heading towards right now is great :p

Mm I think they'll just stick with the 'Best game ever created' and 'Runaway Sales Hit' game style.

I'd argue Pokemon falls under RPG more than it does JRPG. KH is much more JRPGzy than Pokemon

A turn-based RPG based on Zelda? The two main problems I can most easily imagine are capturing the essence of the series and having deep enough mechanics.

The exact nature of what makes Zelda is debatable, but there's definitely an emphasis on puzzles, secrets, and riddles in there somewhere. You know, the stuff that tempts you to use GameFaqs. This sort of thing is not as common in RPG's as it is in Adventure games, at least for non-optional content. I'm guessing that a large emphasis in battle would have to be using appropriate items and tactics for specific enemies, but the overworld might be harder. Maybe what Golden Sun did?

On the other hand, we have the fact that Zelda games typically star a single protagonist. Unless it's 1986, turn based RPGs tend to feature parties of at least three characters, and for good reasons. It could make sense to simply have a full ensemble of characters, with Link serving as the standard mute party leader. The party can contain both familiar faces (Zelda, Impa, Tingle, etc) and original characters.

Love and tolerate.
