Forums - Movies & TV - Spider-Man Homecoming’s Tom Holland To Play Young Nathan Drake For Shawn Levy

Sony Pictures is bullish enough on its upcoming Spider-Man Homecoming star Tom Holland that the studio is doubling down on the young actor by building a second major franchise around him. Holland is attaching to star in Uncharted, in what will be redrafted as a prequel to the treasure-hunting action storyline in the Naughty Dog video game for PlayStation.

Shawn Levy is directing a film that will take its inspiration from a sequence in the third iteration of the video game that focused on the young thief Drake, and his first encounter with the professional rogue, Sullivan. This reformulation of the franchise was an inspiration of Sony Pictures chief Tom Rothman after seeing the latest cut of the Spider-Man film, sources said.

The studio has tried for years with various directors to get this video game to launch a franchise, with past scripts from Joe Carnahan, David Guggenheim and Eric Warren Singer. Sony Pictures will now set a new scribe to draft the story line that captures the protagonist as he grows into the treasure hunter Nathan Drake, who made the game a top seller. Uncharted is produced by Charles Roven, Avi Arad, Alex Gartner and Ari Arad.

Holland first trotted out his Peter Parker character to great acclaim in Captain America: Civil War, the stage setter to the two sequels to The Avengers being directed by Joe and Anthony Russo. WME and Curtis Brown rep the actor. The Jon Watts-directed Spider-Man: Homecoming bows July 7, the first iteration of the webslinger that has directly involved Marvel Studios.

If it wasn't for Sony Pictures, I might have been a bit more excited for this project. However think they really missed the ball by not casting Nathan Fillion years ago and have the project made at that time.

Can't really say if he's a good actor or not until Spider-Man releases, but he sounds like he can play the part. I just hope this isn't a suggestion that the movie will be exclusively about young Nathan.

nathan fillion would have been the worst casting decision ever, as he has next to none star power to pull the crowd in to the theater for a video game movie.. I would argue that chris prat with his Jurrassic park's character is much more closer to Nathan drake than nathan filion real life persona. And as long as Avi Arad is at sony picture.. there is no hope for them to make a good movie.

What where Sony thinking?

This idea sounds terrible. Sony pulled a left hook the other day when Hardy was cast as Venom. Lord only knows where this idea came from.

They could have easily got Jake Gylenhall or Ryan Reynolds if Pratt was too busy / expensive.

What on earth are you talking about?

Nolan North is practically a poor mans Nathan Fillion. Obviously he has no star power, but to say he is the worst is just absurd.

young nathan drake.... younggggggggggggg

I don't mind this premise. Exploring the early years of Nathan and Sully's relationship could be pretty cool. Hard to have any confidence in Sony Pictures, though. That's the next sector of the company that Kaz needs to work on.

You really think they can get anyone remotely Chris Pratt level of pay for such a project.

Well, at least he's playing a younger version. Maybe they'll cast someone better for the "regular age" Drake.

Alternatively, they may be seeing this as a long term series a la James Bond and cast young to keep the aging in check

I suspect this movie is going to flounder, but then again I should at least wait for a trailer before I make such predictions.
