Microsoft Clarifies Xbox Scorpio Frame Rate/Fidelity Stance

It's up to developers to decide how they want to leverage the power of the console.

Microsoft has clarified another detail about the upcoming Project Scorpio console.

Xbox engineering lead Mike Ybarra confirmed that Microsoft will not force developers to ensure there is frame rate parity between Scorpio and Xbox One games. Responding to someone on Twitter who said this would be the case, Ybarra stressed that no such mandate is in place. "No, there isn't," he said to the suggestion that there is a requirement that a game's Xbox One frame rate is the same for its Scorpio version. "This is up to the developer to choose, for their games, what they want to do."

In another tweet, Ybarra laid out Microsoft's policy on this even more clearly and directly: "Developers are free to choose how they use the power of Project Scorpio for games. We have no requirements limiting framerate or fidelity," he said.

Microsoft is positioning Scorpio as the "most powerful console ever made," so it would be unfortunate if developers had to reign in their visions for games by limiting frame rate and fidelity. Microsoft Studios boss Shannon Loftis thinks developers will keep the frame rate consistent for multiplayer games.

All Xbox One games work on Scorpio, though the Scorpio editions can look and perform better, in some cases, if developers want to do that. It is a similar situation with PS4 and PS4 Pro.

Microsoft is expected to share more details on Scorpio at E3 or sooner. Presumably we will learn the console's official name and price, among other things, in the weeks and months to come before the system's launch this holiday.

Just read a Eurogamer article on the subject

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-2017-why-cant-destiny-run-at-60fps-on-ps4-pro

On the face of it, there's nothing here that we couldn't have guessed already (no 60 fps): when you look at the balance of the PS4 Pro and indeed Project Scorpio, both consoles have been specifically designed to run current-gen game engines at higher resolutions and smoother frame-rates. Both Scorpio and PS4 Pro only offer a 31 per cent uplift in CPU power, while GPU sees a 2.3x boost over base hardware with PS4 Pro, rising to a 4.6x uplift on Scorpio vs Xbox One. The core hardware design of both machines is all about scaling up graphics, not the game simulation.

one thing is certain - it would probably cause more problems than it is worth. For a start, operating at 60fps on Pro while base hardware remains at 30fps would give Pro players a big, big advantage. The only way to maintain parity between players would be individual servers for base and Pro owners.

Based on basic logistics, carving up a console audience in this way, or bestowing one set of players with a huge advantage is highly unlikely to happen - something Microsoft's Shannon Loftis pointed out, saying that although developers have the choice, "as a developer I would bet no-one chooses different frame-rates for MP games ever."

If the engine was built with 60fps in mind (not ioptimized to run at 30 on console) then it's possible to have 30 vs 60 in offline modes. Otherwise it seems very unlikely.

But what games will we play though?..... 😬

Xbone... the new "N" word   Apparently I troll MS now | Evidence | Evidence

Hope Destiny 2 can be 60fps in non crucible parts of the game.

I ALMOST bought a game called Misurugi Kamui Hike until I looked at some gameplay. You could always play that... Since you own it!

Its ovbius, a dev would never choose to handicap the majority of players in multyplayer. single player that will be no issue.

It takes genuine talent to see greatness in yourself despite your absence of genuine talent.

Most competitive games are already running at 60FPS, so not much of a problem.
Other than that... why not? It's working on PCs.

So XBO gamers can be fucked if the devs choose so?

Not me. I'm getting a Scorpio so I'LL be doing the fucking!

It already exists on PS4:

Hm. I never even thought about the multi-player FPS parity angle.
