Forums - Movies Discussion - Tom Hardy is Eddie Brock in Venom, the upcoming film from Sonys Marvel Universe

Variety is reporting that Tom Hardy, who played Bane in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises, will next play another iconic comic book villain, Venom. The frequent Spider-Man villain is getting his own film next year, which will be directed by Ruben Fleischer, who made Zombieland.

A few months back, Sony surprised movie fans everywhere by putting a Venom movie on their release schedule. Rumors of a film based on the character had been going around for years but, once Spider-Man started being shared with Marvel Studios, they sort of went away.

With Hardy and Fleischer now aboard, Venom will lead what’s expected to be Sony’s own unique sliver of the Marvel universe—one that’ll feature other famous Spider-Man rogues, and may include a Black Cat and Silver Sable film. No one knows if these villain films will crossover, or just tell one-off comic book stories; what is almost certain, however, is that Spider-Man won’t be part of them.

Sony confirmed the news on their Twitter:

I'm actually completely for this. Tom Hardy is a capable actor and at least fits the physical attributes of Venom. Nothing against Topher Grace but he looked more like Peter Parker than Eddie Brock.

I approve this decision.

This is good...good...

Muda Muda Muda Muda Muda Muda!!!!

Suprised they pulled this off. We'll see how the film is. I don't like the look of the new Spider Man though.

Hope hes not a whiny little bitch like in Spider-Man 3.

I like Tom Hardy, as long as he gets good material he will be a great Venom.

A Venom movie with Tom Hardy playing as Eddie Brock/Venom. I think I'm gonna watch it.

Nope. I'm sorry, I love Tom Hardy, but he seems to be incapable of ever losing his cockney accent, no matter what role he plays, it's always there, which is why the majority of his roles have him stick as an Englishman... unless he can get an AMAZING voice coach to help him do a passable American accent, then I'm not for this decision.

Again, not that he's a bad actor, he's actually a great actor, and anyone that has seen his films will agree, it's just... his accent is way too strong that I don't think he'll be able to play a convincing American role.

Also, not that it was his fault (He just played the character, didn't write him into it), but his Bane was god awful. His acting was decent and he was great as a villain, but he was NOT Bane, just putting that out there lol.

Just make sure to put who you are in the message!

So I guess he won't be taking over for Jackman, then... =/

Oh well, this is good too.
