Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Destiny 2 dev rules out the game for Switch

Destiny 2's online only? Does that mean there'll be no SP at all?

Around the Network

Obviously it doesn't imply a criticism towards Switch, what limits many online games on portables and mobiles is that the only way to play online on them without spending a fortune in mobile phone fees is using them connected with wi-fi, and in most cases only your home, internet points and cafés and hotels offer you unlimited and fast wi-fi, almost everywhere else you'll get a connection that's limited in bandwidth and/or time and/or data. Mobile telcos offer subscriptions with wi-fi hotspots included, but their hotspots aren't very widspread, and they limit you anyway beacuse they don't want you to save too much on your mobile fees using them.

Destiny 1 was online only too. You can play it solo, if you want, but you must be connected to the servers.

I never knew that. Well, I guess that makes my chances of getting the games almost 0.

whats wrong with it being online only?

My PS4 frequently disconnects from the internet. SFV requries online to get points, and it was not fun having it constantly disconnect and thus not being able to gain points at all.

Damn that sucks. Net issue?

Either way, makes sense why you would be less inclined to buy the game.

Yeah, my internet sucks where my consoles are for some reason. I don't really know why.

I don't think anybody is really expecting AAA 3rd party games on Switch where they?

"The Switch, because it’s a portable ........... There’s no plans right now for Switch.”

It's a feature not a bug. If you have an online game why would you limit it to home broadband? I can get a better connection through my phone than on home internet.

Nov 2016 - NES outsells PS1 (JP)

Don't Play Stationary 4 ever. Switch!

Of course Destiny 2 isn't coming to the Switch. After the first game, they have been working hard on using every possible tech that the other consoles have to maximize the experience. Destiny 1 would have a better shot of being ported. If it is releasing this Fall, then the majority of the development happened before Switch was even a thing. Going forward, these developers who have been hard at work on large graphic projects can start thinking Switch with their "next" projects.

You can almost think of this year's big releases on PS4 and Xbox One as the last wave of releases on the "last-gen stationary" consoles before they make games on the new "dual system (less-graphic) Switch" format. It is a direction change, a process change, and not everyone will probably arrive on-time to the party and may skip it all together. It will take a year or two for everyone to get on board with Switch, if they do at all.

...They're home consoles. The Internet tends to be much more common at home than when you're on the go. Yes? If you didn't have stable internet at home, I doubt you'd even be interested in a game(or games) that was marketed as online only or heavily focused on online multiplayer in the first place.

And the Switch can be played perfectly fine at home or on a big tv screen.

Again, what's the problem here exactly?

Yes, the Switch can be played at home... but there it can't play out its advantage.

If you have a Switch and another (more powerful) supported system (PS4/Pro/XBO/Scorpio/PC)... why would you consider to buy the Switch version of a multiplatform game instead of a different version?

The main reason would be that you have the option to play it on the go. But if it is an online only game, there aren't many scenarios where you have good WiFi outside of your home. Free WiFi in most cafés, trains, hotels... (which you have to share with a lot of other people) is "good enough" to browse the internet, but in most cases not good enough for online gaming.
