Forums - Gaming Discussion - Digital Foundry: Minecraft technical analysis Switch vs PS4

Wait, you can gain frame rate by shrinking game worlds, reducing draw distance and lowering resolutions?! What the hell?! If only I knew all these years!

Surprisingly, Minecraft actually seems to be one of the most representative comparisons we've seen. The PS4 and X1 versions are effectively the same so that knocks the comparison down to the X1, and then if you cut the resolution to 720p (a 55%~ drop), reduce some settings, and makes the worlds about a third the size, you end up at something linearly in-line with the Switch.

All three consoles are likley capable of more, but the X1 and Switch versions compare quite linearly relative to their hardware.

The Switch version running more smoothly than PS4 is a pleasant surprise.

One wonders though how the framerate on Switch will hold up if they do boost the docked resolution, given that there are already some minor dips at 720p. Maybe they'd be better off keeping it at 720p for the sake of playability.

You could make the same argument for games like Snake Pass and Lego City Underground, which they've also done videos on and got a respectable amount of views.

Its funny because they barely ever did indie comparisions before.......all of sudden since thats all the switch has they started doing them every other week. Chosing the worst games to compare....games that dont take anything

Switch=Views

They're going to compare anything the Switch gets. I expect NBA Playgrounds comparison, soon.

What an odd comparison. They must be really hard up if they are comparing Minecraft versions.

Well it may be the most popular game ever and performance varies on platforms.

The only other game that beats it in terms of sales is ironically Tetris. Which has sold something like 500~ million copies against Minecrafts 120~ million.
However, Tetris has had like 30+ years to reach that. Makes you wonder how Minecraft will do in another 20-25 years?

Switch better framerate than PS4, nice tech to pump that out at 16 watts of power vs 200 watts, fascinating..
