Do we have any indication from NPD or Nintendo themselves on how many digital copies either Mario Kart 8 or Zelda sold? I really would like to know if outselling Mario Kart 8 on the e-shop is due to having amazing sales or if it's because MK8 and BotW don't sell that much digital copies (since the console has very limited storage space).

We know what from NPD accounting for April 28th and 29th that Mario Kart 8 Deluxe sold more than 460,000 physical units. With digital sales added, the total is more than 550,000 units. So that's at least 90k for Mario Kart 8's launch week in the US eShop. Although this a couple weeks after it's launch, but I'd imagine if it's out selling Mario Kart 8 on the eShop its selling pretty well.

For March NPD we got sales for Zelda from NPD (retail) and from Nintendo themselves (retail + digital). Digital accounted for only ~3% of the total.

I think this has less to do with storage space and is more about owning games on cards.

Thanks for the info.

So applying the same ratio for MK8 and using the 550k number for April from NPD it would mean about 16.5k digital copies for MK8 for April. Although it doesn't help all that much with the current chart, it does give a rough estimate of the range of sales for digital titles on the eShop.

Green098 is right, Nintendo PR provided a breakdown for April NPD. 90k copies of the 550k were sold digitally which amounts to ~17%. Quite the difference in comparison with Zelda.

Yeah, that's a huge difference. If I had to guess I'd say that because Zelda released at the same time as the Switch, people were more inclined to grab the physical game as they were picking up their console.
