Forums - General Discussion - ‘GRABHER’ License Plate Revoked, Deemed ‘Offensive’ with Picture Inside!

Don't know how it works in Canada, but the US Supreme Court ruled that license plates constitute "Government Speech".

http://www.npr.org/sections/thetwo-way/2015/06/18/415462597/high-court-rules-specialty-license-plates-constitute-government-speech

So they're allowed to deny whatever speech they'd like I suppose.

The good news is that I don't think they'd stop him (in the states at least) from painting his car up with decals that says" GRABHER-MOBILE".

Just not on the licenses plate.

It's not about whether you think having a name on a license plate is a big deal or not, it's the fact that it has reached a point now where someone's own name was actually removed off of something of his because someone was apparently triggered by it and complained apparently which is truly pathetic, and the fact that people give into shit like that only makes those people feel like they can remove or censor anything if they complain enough.

First they came for our license plates, and I said nothing.

Personally I think it is silly that they disallowed this. But legally I don't see anything wrong with it.

Sounding the PC alarm over this issue is the silliest thing of all though IMO.

@ bolded: I don't really know how to respond to that part since I can't tell what you're trying to say lol.

Plus I never said it was political correctness, just that it's dumb as fuck that shit like this is even happening since it does just look like yet again more "someone complains to try to get something removed, person they complained to gives in, therefore making said person who complained feel accomplished to try it again with whatever they feel they wanna try to say they're 'offended' over" type of thing that seems to be happening a lot lately. (Though perhaps what you mean is  what I described makes it seem like i'm saying it's political correctness).  I also wouldn't say that anyone should sound any sort of "alarm" over this, but it just sends a horrible message that looks like not even a name that someone was born with is safe anymore if someone finds a way to try to say they're offended by it.

I'm pretty sure I've read about this months ago already.

It's a poem that reads as such

"First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out—

Because I was not a Socialist.

Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Trade Unionist.

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me."

I agree with you that it is dumb to revoke this guy's vanity license plate. Where I disagree is about sending a bad message.

You can apparently be caught on tape braging about molesting women and still have sixty million people promote you to leader of the free world. "Offended snowflakes" are still down about ten million to nothing.

On the subject of sending bad messages, I think the bolded is a pretty abhorent message to send. Grabher is unfortunately a bit of colatteral damage from that message being sent. It sucks for him, but it's the government's property and ultimately not worth getting worked up over.

Oh, dear...PC SJW-ism at its worst....what is more idiotic, that's guy's family name.

What is next? All plates with 69 in them banned cause some puritan nutjob finds them offensive?

I'm offended by your insensitive derogatory use of a specific male body part.

What can I say...I'm insensitive that way. ;)

Ah so it's from a poem, I wouldn't have guessed that lol.

I'm not worked up over it or anything, I just feel like there's so much stuff like this happening lately so to see it hit a point where it's happening to someone's name just seems even more extreme than anything else. It just feels like such a shame that so many people who have done nothing at this point feel are getting dragged down alongside things as a result of collateral damage like you said.

It reminds me of something that happened a little while ago where someone's PSN name was iJihad (Their real name was actually Jihad too) for a long time and they had their account for a long time but then Sony just randomly banned it one day and said it was offensive, obviously because of all the types of terrorist attacks that have happened over the past years but still it just sucks that this type of thing happens and it might affect the wrong people when it's not their fault.

http://kotaku.com/sony-locks-guys-psn-account-because-he-uses-his-real-na-1782680173

I guess what i'm just trying to say is that despite how similar it may sound to something else (such as how in this case Grabher and what Trump was quoted saying which was really gross) (or the other where the guy's actual name was Jihad but was deemed offensive due to stuff like attacks that have happened over the years), I don't agree with the idea that someone couldn't be able to use their own real name on something. Like, it's not their fault that it might sound similar to something that might have bad things associated with it. But as you said it's just sort of collateral damage then but it just punishes the wrong people essentially so it shouldn't happen. If it's his name he has every right to put it on whatever he feels like, it's not his fault.

Edit: I edited aspects of this comment to better accurately portray what I was trying to say at the time, as the original had a lot of errors and was pretty poorly written.

We live in a world where licence plates can be considered harmful to people, fuck this planet.

I'm now filled with determination.

We live in a world in which someone in a government office made a judgement call and the net result is that some crybaby can't get his name on a vanity license plate any more, but still finds himself entitled to plenty of free media attention and a Constitutional Law non-profit speaking on his behalf as he takes this petty fight to court where he'll presumably get the benefit of due process.

This is still the same world in which a man who advises treating women "like shit" and is on the record bragging about grabbing women's pussies can rise to leader of the free world. To head of a country that had 90,000 rapes in 2015 and $100b in unpaid child support due to custodians, 82% of whom are women. And this is a country that is considered pretty progressive in its treatment of women.

The license plate thing is the real crime though.
