I wonder how it'd look like without hardware shortages?

Only Switch or every console, because there where plenty of PS4 and Xone shortages in Europe. Some west Europeans countries like the Belgium, Netherlands, luxembourgh etc didn't even recieve Xone's for months after launch.

In that case, first few weeks sales figures are irrelevant as it's not about demand, but supply.

So switch is tracking behind Xbox One in the first 5 weeks, and is no doubt due for a sharp fall in sales in the same manner.

I fear that you are being serious.

Considering that Switch is still supply constrained in the USA after 11 weeks and reseller prices are above $350, Switch is going to keep doing 60k+ per week in the USA alone. The Xbox One was selling 60k per week globally at that point.

VGC numbers are several weeks behind, but in real time Switch is already ahead of the Xbox One and will continue to grow the gap in its favor. The only systems to provide competition for Switch on these charts are the 3DS and PS4. The 3DS had a bad start, but kicked into a notably higher gear after its price cut and sold more than 10m units in its first 52 weeks.

Based on trajectory, Switch is most comparable to the PS4. It doesn't look like Switch will need a price cut before hitting 10m.

If Switch hits those 10M quick enough, and with good SW support, it won't need any price cut even longer, Ninty will most probably make good bundles for BF-Xmas 2018 to keep sales high and be able to cut price not before 2019.
BTW, when supplies will become more regular, people won't have to buy second hand at inflated price anymore, and there will also be unofficial small discounts every now and then before the first official cut, not to mention GameStop that will offer you a princely $/€/£10 discount (on unboxed and resealed units) if you bring them a PS4, two games, a kidney and your granny.

DDon't you know? The first law of Nintendodynamics syas that you sales go up as your supply GOES DOWN. a.k.a. the rule of artificial shortages.

Also! in this thread: facts!

You all forgot the hiccups of the Xone launch, since it only was released in 21 markets. The Netherlands was not included. You could ship one in from Germany or your store could do so.

Just look at the first weeks of PS4 from a million to less than 90 back too 900k and back to 300k and than back to 750k. If anything supply was like the Switch way more of an issue than demand.

Please excuse my (probally) poor grammar

But you do know that first 9 weeks for PS Vita are only Japan numbers because it wasn't released in the west at that time?

That doesn't seem to matter.

Wii U sold less than 500k in it's first week? Damn... was that bad or what?...

Great to see Switch doing so well. Of course, the real test will come later, but so far, so good.
Thanks for the comparison!

Excellent thread. Thank you for doing this.

After watching this graph I think we can conclude that after week 10 is when things settled down for most consoles.  So I think we are going to have a clear picture of what the baseline is gonna be for the Switch in that timeframe.

Let's all keep in mind that the Switch was a Q1 launch, while the Wii U, PS4, and XBO were all holiday launches.

This !

Everyone seems to forget that lanching in this period of the year can't be compared to a regular holiday launch for many reasons. While this thread is interesting, maybe the OP should be updated with a chart showing the sales difference for the same period in 2014 with 2017.

like the OP said in the long run it won't matter. I pointed out ps4 launch aligned was way higher, but on the other side, it's harde to keep stock on 3 different regions so it would be unfair with the switch. I guess these launch periods are kinda tricky to compare so I guess it's just better to wait and see how sales lvl down
