For twenty years all I've wanted is a true third generation of Star Trek and they keep avoiding actually taking the series forward. Nothing about this appeals to me, the visuals feel way off from Star Trek, especially if it is supposed to take place so close to TOS. I may catch it sometime, but no way paying CBS to watch it.

Well on the plus side if this is reasonably successful that "third gen" Trek may finally happen.

Maybe they chose this time period in their pitches because they weren't sure they'd get a huge enough budget or they likely wanted to piggyback some of the success of the JJ-verse.

Here's the dillema. If I support this and it does well, I'd expect more of the same.  If I don't I expect Star Trek to go into hiding from television for a decade.

On budget this show looks way higher budget in terms of effects and sets.  I read they had roughly $6 million per episode.  I don't watch Star Trek for budget though, I watch it for ideas, stories, and characters.  I'll take a profound story on a campy set over a generic story on an expensive set.

I must say, I'm not particularly impressed. I really wanted to like Discovery, but it seems they want me not to like it. I see an over-reliance on CGI. The Klingon designs are way too weird. I see near JJ levels of lens flare. The fact that it's another prequel likely means they will create more continuity errors. I'm just not feeling it. CBS claimed this series was more for the traditional Star Trek fans than for the JJ-verse Star Trek fans, but what I'm seeing suggests the opposite. And worst of all, they want those of us in the US to pay a separate subscription fee to watch it, while the rest of the world gets it on Netflix, something most people already have a subscription to.

Yep, that's total BS.  I already have Netflix.  I'm not paying for CBS too.  I can't see this succeeding being locked behind an extra paywall like that.

I saw a video for a spoof of Star Trek coming out called Orville

My biggest take away is how much better the uniforms looks than Discovery's drab ones. Not sure about the comedy, but I'm more apt to watch this, which I did not expect.

Yeah, it's pretty funny and sad that Orville looks better than Discovery.

No way dudes. Orville is comical, it reminds me of Galaxy Quest. If there was a Orville prequel, I'm sure the uniforms will look different too. Now about the uniforms in Discovery, I think it fits fine in term of the timeline.

Example:

Enterprise: Enterprise NX-01 Launched April 16, 2151

Discovery: Discovery NCC-1031 Launched unknown.

NCC-1031, which is a low registry number, which means that the ship is an early era ship.

  • Enterprise – Enterprise NX-01 – 2151
  • TOS – USS Enterprise NCC-1701 – 2250s & 2265
  • TNG – USS Enterprise NCC-1701-D – 2363
  • DS9 – USS Defiant NX-74205 – 2370
  • VOY – USS Voyager NCC-74656 – 2371

I hope that means it'll be on Netflix here. I'm such a sucker for Michelle Yeoh. I'm programmed to want to like anything she's in.
