Forums - Nintendo Discussion - My first time seeing a Switch in public was at the movie theaters.

If the Switch continues to sell well, i can see Sony and Microsoft following suit with the Hybrid thingy.

I don't even remember the last time I saw someone with a handheld games console outside or on public transport. I must look awfully weird/uncool whipping out my 3DS/Vita on public transport sometimes. But eh whatever, I don't really pay much heed to what others are thinking anyway.

That will be huge difference compared to Wii U, even to PS4/XB1, users alone will market Switch buy using them outside house.

I've yet to see a Switch outside. I'd go as far as saying that I've seen more people with a PS4 box in the past few years than with a dedicated handheld.

Oddly enough, the last handheld I saw in public was a GBA a couple of days ago. A bunch of children were playing Emerald on the street, an complaining they coudn't find a Link Cable anywhere anymore.

You know it deserves the GOTY.

Good that there is no other device currently on the market that's portable and able to provide entertainment for a few minutes. Nintendo basically has it made for them.

I can't quite tell if this is meant to be sarcastic, but yeah sure there's phones and other mobiles and such right now obviously but they don't offer the same type of full blown beautiful graphics console quality games that the Switch can do currently, or not any phone games that I know of at least.

I think having the ability to use real buttons and analog sticks is a bigger deal than graphics. That, and games like BOTW. Mobile doesn't have anything close to that.

If you look at the mobile gaming market vs handheld market it seems that buttons aren't as big of a deal anymore. The Switch will scoop up the niche of people who care about buttons but will not be able to compete with mobile for people who go more for convenience than physical input. It's also questionable if mobile gamers actually want AAA experiences on the go or if they maybe stick to games that are enjoyable in short bursts.

What I'm getting at is that Nintendo does not directly compete with the mobile market, for that it does not have the convenience factor. The Switch has its own demographic and will most likely not convince many mobile gamers to switch.

I don't think I said Nintendo is going to capture the ios crowd... did I? Different demographics.

I went to go see Guardians of the Galaxy 2 (fantastic movie btw) with one of my friends like a week and a half ago and he pointed out to me that someone in one of the lower rows of seats was playing a Nintendo Switch so I looked down and was like "oh shit". I hadn't seen a Switch in public (or in person for that matter, but mainly because I haven't been looking for any yet) at all until that moment. I couldn't tell from where I was sitting but I think the person was playing Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.

I just felt like this was interesting since it's pretty amazing to know that if the Switch can continue its momentum it could eventually be a completly common thing to just see people playing a Switch in any location if it becomes that mainstream. Being able to play a full blown console game while waiting for a movie to start? That's fucking cool.

All Nintendo has to do is just keep up the momentum and the Switch could be truly game changing in the industry imo.

Was it at the Tempe Marketplace theater?

Nope, I don't live in Arizona lol. It was just at a regular theater in California.

Was this in Toronto Canada at Fairview Mall by any chance?

Also nope lol. It was at a Cinemark in California.
