Forums - PC Discussion - NieR Automata (PC)'s FAR Mod Prevents Pirated Copies from working

http://www.pcgamer.com/the-unofficial-nier-automata-far-mod-contains-an-anti-piracy-check-and-people-arent-happy/

Long story short, Kaldaien included a function in the mod to prevent pirates from playing NieR if it is unlicensed so he isn't liable for copyrighted content injection (using his mod to install pirated DLC). Pirates get mad and show how entitled they are.

Not too shocking. A lot of mods will break or cause other issues with pirated versions of games. Seen it many times in the Bethesda modding community. And not only will the authors not provide support to anyone who complains of issues originating from pirated copies, they also have considerable contempt for pirates and many will ban or request a ban against those who out themselves as such.

What's shocking isn't that it did so accidentally, but that he intentionally programmed it that way.

Now we're probably going to get a mod of the mod that allows pirates to use the mod.

Even that doesn't shock me.  There were several mods I know of for Skyrim and Mount&Blade that checked the game as a means of rooting out pirated versions.

Good. There's a reason why nintnedo and other Japanese companies are so protective over their content. PC was the last place they would turn tonwithout some sort of backup.

lol I read that in his voice

He's practically begging for someone to crack his mod, but it seems he's fine with it. That said, not a bad move, assuming it works as intended for all people (which it should, considering it simply checks license validity using the Steam API - ought to be pretty hard to get that wrong).

Well within his rights to do that and I don't blame him at all but, holy cats, he really does sound like a pretentious asshole. Seems like part of the uproar over this mod in particular is because he wanted to be smug instead of just disabling the mod and giving a concise reason. I have no pity for either side.

He also blacklisted two legit game owners because one called him out beforehand and the other had moderated him on Steam for breaking site rules. He basically took it very eprsonal and decided to lock those two out of using an essential mod for the game. So not only is he smug, but also someone who is quick to anger and easily mix his feelings with his work.

Taken from one of the threads on Reddit r/crackwatch (before it was taken down):

Taken from r/crackwatch

"This is nothing new. This modder is infamous for his other trick in his mods. Basically he has a "blacklist" he keeps in his mods. If he gets in a fight with a person because that said person disagrees with him about something, he will put that persons Steam ID into his "blacklist" that's inside his code in the mod. If the said person tries to use his mod, the game will simply refuse to run and will crash on startup. He even admits this, go google it.
Long story short, don't trust this a**hole. Straight up Denuvo shill and a butthurt idiot who cant accept opinion that's different than his. Don't download his mods, even if you are a legit user."

Can't claim the veritability of this, but seems kinda underhanded.

WORKAROUND: Use FAR mod 0.5.6.8 not 0.5.6.9
