So, I did some editing after going back throughout the last 3 years and made some changes.

I noticed that 2016 was always ahead of 2015 right from the beginning... and 2017 was always ahead of 2016 right from the beginning.
Never at any point did either year drop before their respective predecessor. Not even 2016 from 2015, where they were only separated by less than 500k.

I also noticed that despite 2017 being its peak year by a wide margin, the PS4 had the "weakest" December out of the 3 years.

This could be a consequence of the games release schedule slipping out of November/December to the first quarter, with the 3rd party yearly offering still releasing in september/october. If the trends continues over Q1, it might mean the PS4 sales are loosing momentum though.

Nope, this is a consequence of not having a lower priced SKU in the market in December. Simple as that. The PS4 sold better all year than any other year in 2017, and went on to have the best BF in PlayStation history and the best November sales outside launch in PS4 history. All because for one week it had stock of a $199 SKU.

This has nothing to do with games or momentum. Its pricing.

I've also included a new poll.

If there is enough interest, I would be willing to do another comparison thread between 2017 and 2018.

Though, I would like to let some time pass before I do it, preferably when we get to March. And that's assuming somebody else doesn't already do one. :P

I think you should just add another column to your existing table and call it 2018

Sony obviously didn't think they needed a price drop. But are we talking about sales world-wide in December or just US?

If US, then they underestimated the uptake of Switch or how well Xbox would sell in December. No doubt they will learn from their mistakes this December period in the US.

In terms of world-wide, didn't PS4 still do really well outside the US?? According to Polygon on Jan 8th Sony had sold "73.6 million units, as of Dec. 31, 2017." So that would mean sales of 3.6million worldwide for December alone, because beginning of December Sony said they had sold 70million.

If I decide to continue on with this thread instead of starting another one for 2018, I'll most likely just do 2017 and 2018 and drop '15 and '16, since chances are 2018 will either be close to, equal, or better than 2017.

If 2018 is lagging noticeably and considerably behind 2017, (unlikely), then I'll bring back the prior two years.

New Years numbers have been added and the brings 2017 to its end total of 20.2 million.

When the first numbers of 2018 are added, I will be starting a brand new thread specifically comparing 2017 and 2018, to determine which year will be the peak year.

I would like to ask the mods to lock this thread once that time comes and 2018's first hardware numbers are posted, until then, I ask that this thread remain open.

If PS4 can keep this momentum up, and with this year's lineup, I find it hard to believe they won't, another 20+mill in 2018 will take them to 93 mill minimum. Might be tough to get 100 mill as they need 24-25million this year to hit that. Not impossible, but very very tough. Maybe if they release Last of Us 2 for the November-December holiday sales, then they might just do it. One thing is for certain, barring any major disasters, 100million in 2019 is 100% doable and still well ahead of PS2 sales.

Now that the first week numbers of 2018 have come in, I have officially started a brand new thread centered around that: http://gamrconnect.vgchartz.com/thread.php?id=234574 Therefore, I would like to ask the Mods to please lock this thread. Thereby, concluding this chapter of the PS4's life cycle and beginning a new one.
