Forums - Gaming Discussion - Anyone liked the Don Mattrick era better than Phil Spencer?

Don Mattrick was responsible for the growth and downfall of Xbox, he made the best 3rd party contracts, signed the best names, brought MGS and FF to Xbox. Some of the best 1st party games came out under his helm. Xbox was exciting, even Kinect was to some, and though his original Xbone vision was terrible, it was still a vision.

Phil Spencer on the other hand, while a nice guy, made Xbox boring imo. Xbox lacks vision and seems lost. 1st party has become predictable, the few exclusives he has he culls further by cancelling Phantom Dust, Scalebound and Fable Legends. Trolls fans with Conker in Project Spark. We were led to believe he was gonna bring more exciting exclusives to Xbox but it didn't happen. While the competition has had a better E3 each year surpassing the last, Xbox' best E3 was 2014 and it went downhill year after year, the sad thing is the big 2014 games were cancelled. http://www.usgamer.net/articles/revisiting-xbox-e3-2014-remembering-the-dead

recap Microsoft's generation in review:
- Start Lift London
- Downsize the XBLA/Microsoft Studios team because MS doesn't want to be in the business of publishing so many indie games
- Close Microsoft Victoria
- Cancel Black Tusk's original game and make them the Gears studio
- Close Xbox Entertainment Studios
- Buy Mojang
- Merge Lift London with other UK-based small teams
- Promote Kudo to oversee Lift London and other UK based teams
- Kudo transfered out of Microsoft Games
- Spin off Twisted Pixel Games
- Close Press Play
- Close Lionhead

Yes, he was on his way to destroying XBox.

I would have to know what his period was. From when to when.

Was he responsible for the game diversity on the xbox 360 including JRPG? Then yes.
If not? Then no.

It looks to be from 2007 to 2013.

I cringe everytime someone says "Xbone"...

OT: I prefer Phils era, he's very honest and i know he is invested in Xbox and its future. Yes we had the cancellation of Scalebound and such but that is the gaming industry. You never know what's going to happen nor why. But i think he's my favorite of the big 3's heads of gaming. He's ushered Xbox into a new era of true customer service and listening directly to fans which has trickled into all of Microsoft and i think the learnings from the Xbox division has created a new culture at MS and i think it shows in how good the company is doing now, though they've never struggled.

Overall, i think he's taking Xbox where it needs to be.s

Phantom Dust isn't cancelled (a remake was), Fable Legends sucked, and Scalebound might have sucked as well.

I do agree there seems to be a lack of direction on X1, primarily because we don't know what happening outside of Scorpio. However, I think this may be due to a X1 reboot at E3. Simply just announcing a few big projects can atleast give the impression they're invested in Xbox.

Let's see. Xbox 360 released in 2005, mattrick took over in July 2007. People generally seem to say Xbox started off the gen well but PS3 was the one kicking ass by the end.

So Xbox 360 started off with some great ideas, followed that up with some great exclusives and really good 3rd party support, even from Japanese devs. All the great exclusives around the 2007/8 period (Halo 3, Mass Effect, Lost Odyssey, Tales of Vesperia to name a few) would have surely been planned out well ahead of time (ie. before mattrick arrived). Then after he arrives those kind of games go off the rails (Halo 3 to Halo 4) stop being exclusive (Mass Effect) or stop coming to Xbox (JRPGs). He would have been the one that scrapped Xbox's Japanese support. The one that decided not to purchase Bioware and let EA get them instead. The one that oversaw the decline of Halo.

So in short mattrick fucked up Xbox long before he came out with that terrible Xbox One idea. Phil may be all talk, no action. But compared to mattrick... he's still fucking fantastic!

Well then based on this - I would prefer Phil. Although I prefer whoever was before Mattrick based on this info.

Apparently not at MS anymore. A old Sega guy as poster above said.

MS should try and get that guy back lol.

Who doesn't love Don Mattrick? He was a genious and an idiot at the same time! Will never forget how much fun the whole PR disaster was that he created in 2013. ^^
