Forums - Music Discussion - Help with piano

I've started piano not too long ago. It's going fine, but I was wondering what I could do to consistently improve over the next few years. I'm not in any rush, so any feedback of any sort would be appreciated.

For reference, I am using a Yamaha 88 key keyboard that is weighted. As of now, i know the basics and can play simple/basic songs

Daily dedication. Excuses don't help. Good luck.

...to avoid getting banned for inactivity, I may have to resort to comments that are of a lower overall quality and or beneath my moral standards.

I don't know much about piano specifically, but I've played Clarinet, Alto Sax, Guitar, and Bass guitar. One thing they all have common is practice, practice, practice.

You should find time to practice every single day. Even if it's only for 15-20 minutes.

Once you are completely familiar with instrument and can fluently read music, practice the the scales that fit the style of music you play the most first, but you should learn them all eventually. Practice them until you can just auto-pilot them. Once you get that down you can pretty learn to play anything.

My son gets head aches sometimes when he plays theI saxaphone. Any suggestions?

Could be number of things.

  • He could be chomping down the on mouth the piece too hard.
  • The mouthpiece may be too big/small and affecting air flow, causing strain.
  • The mouthpiece could be vibrating his teeth and aggravating nerves, rubber mouthpieces are good for that.
  • The reed may be too hard.
  • It could be the sound of the instrument itself, he can try wearing ear plugs while playing.
  • Or it could be a medical issue, though if the headaches aren't severe, it's likely not.

I'm making sure I play daily, even if it's just playing a song I already know.

Yeah, please make sure you play it everyday, as with any instrument. 90% of it is practice, the last 10% is the personality that you'd like to bring to your music. I'm no Yiruma or Chopin but I can hold my own and it's mainly because of practice. Good luck.

Just don't get bored with it. It's always exciting when you're first starting out and you WANT to practice every day. But it's easy to lose interest after a while and you find yourself practicing less and less, until eventually you stop altogether (like I did). So stay on it!

Practice daily and improve on reading the notes faster, if you still need practice on note reading

Scales (Major and Minors) are very useful as well

Well sort of in same situation. Did play Piano when younger, so not a beginner at all, but definitely not as easy to jump back on like a bike.

But any suggestions on say some apps or sites to get some good free music to re-learn so to speak.
All these apps I've tried thus far are just weird. They are either like wanting you to learn how to play piano by pushing fake keys on your tablet, or its like watching a guitar hero game and they want to teach you that way.

I know how to play Piano. I've been in band. I can read sheet music. I can keep a beat/tempo, ect. I just want some app that has say 100 different sheets of music for say beginners, then 100 for imtermediates, then 100 for advanced, ect.

Something to gradually get me back into the swing of things before I start grabbing songs I want to play, yet know are too complex for my currently clunky fingers.

Synthesia is useful. Useful for finding any song you want. I'm currently doing the MGS theme
