Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Nintendo: Switch Buyers Are Primarily Men In Their 20s/30s

This is true of every system in the release window. In fact, it is basically true of every new piece of tech.

Actually for Wii I remember having to line up for one and there were several soccer moms in the line up for sure. I remember this because one of them got very damn heated with the store clerk not letting her have more than one system. I also remember a good number of parents wanting one for their little kids.

Switch is definitely a very different product with different demographic appeal, but equal enthusiasm.

So basically the hardcore Nintendo fans. Obviously in future when the price is cheaper or during the holidays they'll try and push for the kids and family market.

I think they should stick with this market for a while (through 2018). It should always be a strong emphasis point for the Switch. I'd even consider keeping that the focus through 2020, then releasing a mid-gen Switch update for older/core gamers, while at that time sliding the old Switch down for younger demos.

The New 2DS XL is perfect for the kids market and I think they plan to keep 3DS around for a while for that very reason. It's good enough for kids. It introduces kids to Nintendo IP, then by the time they're getting to that 11-13 age range, they can graduate up to the Switch.

True.  Those are the ones who are going to have the disposable income to buy the nice new toy/console at launch.  It's great to sell to them, but if Nintendo wants this to be a big success, it needs to appeal to kids, too.  Kids whose parents will buy it at Xmas when the price drops.

They have Mario, Pokemon, Kirby etc. I dont think kids will be a problem. Young kids I mean. Older kids are playing COD and BF.

Here's a dirty little secret though: the vast majority of Nintendo fans are adults. Even the Pokemon audience:

2DS/3DS is great for kids. Switch can be there for them when they are a little older at age 10-13 and ready to step up to something bigger.

I think they should target both but with the Switch launching out of a holiday season and with only really Zelda as the main seller they were absolutely right to target their older hardcore fanbase.

Going forward as more titles like splatoon,  Mario Kart,  Mario,  pokemon etc release they should target both older hardcore and younger kids and families.

Well they are targeting both. They just show older people playing it so kids want it too.

Gotta get them teens. It's been a long time since Nintendo appealed to teenagers, pretty sure they're all on PS4 these days and they generate a ton of money.

That tends to require the kind of games Nintendo doesn't get, though.

So hopefully Nintendo will create games that focuses on this age group :p

It doesn't mean neccessarily they need suddenly to make hyperviolent games, but Zelda, Mario Kart, Mario Odyessy, Bomberman, and IPs like Contra, Street Fighter, NBA, NHL, NFL, Megaman, Xenoblade, Fire Emblem, Monster Hunter, Splatoon, Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest could definitely have success on this platorm with this demographic. Though hey, even though I personally don't like the series, Take 2 may want to think about a GTAV port for Switch, it would probably sell ok.

Of course, I'm not even talking about FPS or Fifa games, but rather more games like Xenoblade or Zelda rather than games like Amiibo Festival or 1,2 Switch
